"Abel" is a supporting antagonist in Glitch Productions' adult animated dark comedy/surreal web series The Amazing Digital Circus, serving as a minor character in the first six episodes and the secondary antagonist of the seventh episode, Beach Episode.
He is a mannequin NPC, created by Caine for the purpose of spying on the Circus Members for a while, until revealing himself to them and telling them he supposedly knows a way to leave the circus.
He is voiced by John Whinfield, who also voices Mud and Jack in Glitch Productions' other series, The Gaslight District.
His Neutral Ranking
Why Isn't He Good Nor Evil?
He has no heroic deeds; he mostly did his villainy by psychologically manipulating the circus members despite slipping up at times, although to be fair, this was done under the order of Caine. However, he was becoming a smarter NPC as time went on, causing Caine to delete him.
Appearance
Abel resembles one of the regular Mannequins, however his defining trait is that he drew a smiley face onto his head.
Personality
Abel presents himself to be rather cunning and observant, as shown by the way he knows how the other character act, such as knowing Jax collects keys or Caine commits to the bits he does. He also laments not interacting before and felt genuine sorrow for the people who abstracted so far.
He's shown to be rather anxious, fearing Caine or Kinger messing with his plan to escape, and being desperate to encourage others to believe in him. When Pomni offers to buy him a beer in the real world, he doesn't respond positively, instead only continuing to be adamant on her doing "the right choice" He implies he knows Kinger well, but is aversive about talking to him, implying some bad blood between the two.
However, everything about Abel is revealed to be nothing more than an act. He's yet another NPC created by Caine and becomes a lot more upbeat and casual once the act comes to light. Though, like Caine, he also lacks a plethora of self awareness, calling him stringing the players along towards the false hope of escaping a "performance" and even asks Caine for a raise, not realizing how callous he sounds. Unsurprisingly, no one bats an eye when Caine immediately deletes him for becoming too sentient.
Biography
Abel was shown throughout the series as a standalone poseable mannequin that stalks the main cast, viewing them from afar within the circus. He later introduces himself to Pomni and the rest in "Beach Episode", telling them he is a human that was given the appearance of an NPC, and was overlooked by Caine. He claims to know of a way out of the circus without Caine finding out, convincing them to trust him and bringing them to an isolated area to tell them, minus Kinger, of his plan to leave the circus: distract Caine, get into his office and find an Administrator console to turn off the game.
He mentions he knew Kinger in the real world, and they both invented the Digital Circus together at a company labelled "C&A". However, Abel had noticed his coworkers being put into "stasis pods" and hooked into the Digital Circus. When he confronted the higher ups at C&A about this fact, he was forced into the Digital Circus himself.
Once he tells them of his plan, he introduces himself as his real name; Abel. While Jax distracts Caine, Abel brings Ragatha and Pomni with him to get Administrator access to Caine's office. While on the way, he claims he and Kinger had a falling out of some sort, and despite wanting to work with him again, he cannot do so due to a "promise" he had made.
He laments over a locket with an unseen picture inside, before continuing on. Once inside, Abel grabs enough administrator passes for everyone, except himself. Pomni and Ragatha are adamant on bringing Kinger along with them, but Abel is still against trusting him. Despite this, he agrees to let them bring Kinger along. Once the plan was complete, he helps them all arrive at Caine's office using a collision glitch, leaving himself behind. When Pomni offers to buy him a beer in the real world, Abel only responds by telling her to 'make the right choice'.
The team succeed in invading Caine's office, finding the console, but after a heated argument, Jax turns off the console, and Caine appears, revealing the whole situation to just be another "adventure", and that everything, including Abel's story, was just "worldbuilding". To confirm this, Abel spawns in, now acting completely differently and laughing at the success of the Adventure. Abel then asks Caine for a raise, to which Caine then decides to delete him, claiming he's getting "too smart". As he's blipped from existence, the locket he held dropped to the floor, revealing the image inside to be nothing more than a picture of a hotdog.
Trivia
- Caine and Abel's names are likely references to the Bible, the two first human siblings named Cain and Abel. Furthermore, Caine deleting Abel could be a reference to when Cain killed Abel.
- Abel could have been a reference to "Caine and Abel" which was previously thought to be what C&A stood for.
- This was later implied in Episode 6: They All Get Guns, where the smaller pistols had "Caine & Abel" written on them.
- He carries a locket with seeming emotional value, relating to a "promise" he had made.
- However, this was part of his false story, and there is nothing more than a picture of a hotdog inside. Although, it could imply that Caine promised something to Scratch, the first abstracted human, as they appear in the advertisement of dobby dogs in Spudsy's.
- Despite being an NPC, he knows a lot about the humans, especially about Kinger. Since he is created by Caine, this implies Caine knows more about the humans than he's letting on.
- In Netflix subtitles, Abel's death scream is noted as a "Human Delete Sound" However, this is likely a mistake on the subtitler's part, as Gummigoo made a similar sound on upon deletion, which was also noted as a Human Delete Sound.
- Abel is referred to as an NPC early on in the English subtitles of Episode 7, before his name is revealed to be Abel.
