Characteristic by their highly developed carapaces, Ajarakan wrap themselves in molten metal that they rub together to heat up and create explosions. Presumably due to the friction of the metal, they can reach high enough temperatures to melt even the ground or bullets. They can also use their strong limbs to grip onto the ceiling and move around freely, so a hunter must watch out from every angle, including above.
~ Ajarakan's entry in the Hunter's Notes

The Ajarakan is a species of monster introduced in Monster Hunter Wilds. A species of Fanged Beast that inhabits the Oilwell Basin, the Ajarakan's body is covered in metallic scales, which it can heat up via friction and allow it to scorch foes. Aggressive and feared by the people of Azuz, hunts to put down these monsters are a common occurrence for the safety of people that live near it.

Why aren't they heroic or villainous?[]

Ajarakans are animals that act out of survival instincts. As such, their harmful acts aren't motivated by malice, making them neutral.

Physiology[]

The Ajarakan is a large, primate-like Fanged Beast. Its physique mixes traits of both monkeys and great apes, possessing a long tail but also a rather burly, top-heavy physique. Its body is mostly covered in metallic red scales, forming small spikes on its elbows and curved, flame-like ones one its tail, head and back. Said back spines are incredibly large and give the impression of a raging fire. It has four digits on each limb, with its hands lacking claws but possessing opposable thumbs and palm pads. The Ajarakan's face somewhat resembles a carnivoran's, with its longer snout, and it has bluish patches on its nose, forehead and around its eyes. Its eyes also have large golden pupils.

Abilities[]

An inhabitant of the swelteringly hot Oilwell Basin, the Ajarakan is an incredibly agile predator, brachiating at incredible speeds on the structures that criss-cross its home. Its arms are incredibly powerful, allowing it to manhandle and restrain hunters with ease, while its metallic scales not only provide decent defence, but also grant the hardness to dig through solid earth with a single charge. Like all large monsters, the Ajarakan is incredibly resilient, being capable of standing its ground solidly until whittled down with attacks or hit with a tremendous force, such as a compressor from an ancient forge. It can also utilise its environment in attacks, hurling lava-filled rocks at hunters to inflict Blastblight.

As the Ajarakan battles, friction from its frequent collisions with the ground cause its metallic scales to heat up, particularly its back. This imbues its body with scorching heat, so much so that standing near it deals damage. When enraged, the Ajarakan will repeatedly hit its shell with its own tail, causing its entire body to heat up and glow red hot. In this form, the Ajarakan can melt through rock with its bare hands, sending waves of lava flying with every swipe it takes, with regular ammo and arrows melting on its hide. It can also unleash its ultimate move in this state; it curls into a ball and rotates at incredible speeds, heating its shell up until its glows brightly before crashing onto its target, dealing tremendous damage and burning them terribly. Fortunately, this powerful attack dazes the Ajarakan and opens a window for attack. The Ajarakan's scales also become soft and malleable when heated up, allowing for more damage to be dealt to it, while hunters can also beat it to the point of exhaustion to cool it off.

Behaviour[]

The Ajarakan is an incredibly aggressive and territorial monster, often picking fights with other creatures in its territory such as Rompopolo. When encountering a foe, it will attempt to intimidate them by flexing, showing off its powerful physique before going on the attack, attacking with merciless combos of punches and shoulder bashes, occasionally intersected with some tail strikes. They also seem relatively fearless of humans, with a trio of Ajarakan invading Azuz in an attempt to get to the Everforge.

Ajarakans appear to be social animals, hunting in packs which allow them to attack and defend simultaneously. What they eat is currently unknown, but it's known that they tend to be at the mercy of the region's apex, Nu Udra, whose multiple arms allow it to pick pack members off and defeat them with ease. As Nu Udra doesn't have turf wars with any other monster than Arkveld (which seems to be a predation attempt of the latter on the former), it can be assumed that Ajarakan is the Cephalopod's favourite prey.

Habitat[]

Ajarakans live in the Oilwell Basin, where they tend to live in the higher layers amongst the ancient machinery. Like many monsters in the Forbidden Lands, they will occasionally turn up in the Wounded Hollow, drawn to the village of Suja that lies just beyond its gates for unknown reasons.

Trivia[]

  • Ajarakan has Turf Wars with Rompopolo and Nu Udra, winning the former and losing the latter.
  • Ajarakan is the first Fanged Beast that can have its tail severed.
  • The people of Azuz simply refer to Ajarakan as "Great Apes" as they, like many cultures in the Forbidden Lands, do not give names to Monsters like the Guild does.
  • Its Tempered form will always start out in its powered up state.
  • Ajarakan’s name is derived from “Acala”, a Buddhist wrath deity, and “Arakan”, which is Japanese for “Buddhist Saint”. This is referenced in its firey back spines, resembling the flames Acala is often depicted with, as well as the blue patch on its forehead resembling the third eye of enlightenment.
