“ | The most destructive force in the world is negativity. It is true power. Negative energy exists in all living things. It's created from emotions such as fear, anger, hatred, jealousy, and aggression. I can manipulate this energy, convert it into beams of destructive power that annihilate anything in its path. ~ Akkuman to Goku. |
Akkuman, known in English as Spike or Spike the Devil Man, is the secondary antagonist of the Fortuneteller Baba Saga of the manga/anime series Dragon Ball. He is Fortuneteller Baba's strongest fighter expept for a short period where he was the second strongest next to Son Gohan.
He was voiced by Michihiro Ikemizu in Japanese and Justin Cook in English.
Biography[]
Akkuman was a very skilled fighter who was said to have won the World Martial Arts Tournament twice. At some point he was recruited by Fortuneteller Baba to be one of her fighters. Akkuman was her top fighter among her five warriors. However, it was said that no one managed to get a chance to fight him, as no one was able to beat Bandages the Mummy, who was the third strongest fighter. Akkuman is the most lethal out of the five warriors, willing to kill and cheat often in order to win. He was said to have killed many fighters before outside of Baba's work.
At one point, Baba recruited a dead warrior named Son Gohan for a day in order to fight for her, thus taking Akkuman's place as her strongest fighter, although it lasted only for a little while. That same day, Goku, who had just defeated the Red Ribbon Army, went to Baba's palace along with Yamcha, Krillin, Upa, and Puar in order to ask her where was the last Dragon Ball. Since they had no money to pay, they had to fight Baba's five warriors one-by-one. After all of Goku's friends and Baba's first three fighters lost, Goku was about to fight Akkuman, who watched his previous encounter with Bandages but was confident in beating him despite Son Gohan's warnings. Akkuman used his wings to fly and get the advantage but Goku managed to jump high and kick him back. He then attacked Goku again, but was punched in the face and almost fell into the pond before he flew back in time. Desperate, Akkuman decided to use his last resort and most deadly attack, the Devilmite Beam, a powerful attack that transforms the target's negative thoughts, causing him to explode and die. Baba was against him using it, telling him that he went too far, but Akkuman fired it at Goku. To everyone's surprise, however, Goku was not affected at all, as Goku was pure-hearted and thus not affected. Akkuman then used his spear to attack Goku and managed to hit him, almost causing him to fall into the pod. Goku, however, used his tail to get back up, and after a few exchange of hits, he kicked Akkuman into the wall, winning the fight.
King Piccolo Saga[]
Akkuman's poster was seen when Tambourine placed all the fighter's posters into the wall of Pilaf's plane, implying that Akkuman might have participated in the 20th World Martial Arts Tournament, but it's unknown if he won, as King Chappa was also implied to have won that same tournament. Fortunately for him, Tambourine was killed by Goku before he had a chance to fight him.
Powers and Abilities[]
Akkuman is very skilled with many dangerous attacks and at the point he first appeared he was one of the stronger antagonists Goku had faced even making Roshi fear him and warning everyone of his power. However, he wasn't the strongest, as Tao Pai Pai and even Assistant Black in his battle suit put up a better fight against Goku. Despite his skills, he was beaten by Goku with minimal effort. His Devilmite Beam, despite failing against Goku, is a very dangerous weapon with the potential to kill even the most powerful enemies as long as they have evil thoughts.
Why He Isn't Heroic or Villainous?[]
- While he is a demon that kills unnecessarily and takes some pleasure on it, he just does his job. As well he is not portrayed as a villain in the series.
- While he gives his energy to Goku's Super Spirit Bomb, this act is too vague to qualify him as a hero.
