The Anglerfish is a minor antagonist from the movie, Finding Nemo.
Why aren't they heroic or villainous?[]
Biography[]
Marlin and Dory are after Philip Sherman's diving mask when The Anglerfish lures them into a dark crevasse with her brilliant dorsal fin. She eventually becomes immobilized after being entangled in the mask around a rock, but not before making one more effort to bite Dory and Marlin.
Later, when Nigel tells Nemo and the Tank Gang about the Anglerfish, a couple of fencing marlins who had heard Marlin's tale also brought it up.
After the movie's credits, Blenny (having overcame his fear of sharks and other fish predators) consumes the Anglerfish in a single bite.
Background[]
The Anglerfish is a species of territorial deep-sea fish that possesses the capacity of bioluminescence, a trait shared by all abyssopelagic animals. It employs bioluminescence to attract its prey, which is mostly smaller fish. It aggressively assaults the prey while attempting to grab and consume their food once they have been drawn close enough by its light without realizing they are being approached by a predator.
Trivia[]
- It is likely this anglerfish is a female since only female anglerfish have a lure. Males on the other hand are much smaller and do not have lures. They stick on females as mates.
- The anglerfish serves as a boss in the video game adaptation of the film, where she chases Marlin across the abyss until Dory manages to decipher the mask's writing.
