The Bird is the overarching antagonist of Pixar's 2nd full-length animated feature film A Bug's Life.
She's a small finch bird who hunts down bugs in order to feed them to her babies, and she's the main reason why Hopper's eye is blinded.
Why isn't she heroic or villainous?[]
- Unlike most characters in A Bug's Life, she seems to be your average everyday bird just providing for her family and doing average bird stuff.
- Despite looking like an antagonist to all of the bugs for wanting to eat them and feed them to her baby chicks, including villains like Hopper, this is just natural bird behavior that doesn't go beyond the line into any of the bad categories.
History[]
When Flik attempts to stop the circus bugs from leaving, he sees one of her feathers, her nest, and her three unhatched eggs inside it nearby and retreats. The bird appears to sees the bugs and chases after them for food. Meanwhile, Dot watches on a dandelion seed and tries to make her wings grow in, but the dandelion seed breaks off and leaving her in the air as the bird flies up to attempts to capture her. Francis catches Dot and they hide in the cracked riverbed, but he is knocked out by a falling rock. Flik convinces the circus bugs to rescue Dot and Francis while Heimlich mistakes the bird for a male bird (calling her Mr. Early Bird) and Slim distract the bird. After saving Dot, they fly into the trees with Dim where the Bird is unable to capture them. She accidentally pricks her feet on the branch's thorns and flies away back to her nest.
The encounter with the bird inspires Flik to put together a plan of constructing a model bird to scare the grasshoppers away when they return to Ant Island. When their bird is finally used, P.T. Flea who also mistakes it for a real bird, sets it on fire with his Flaming Death act. After being rescued by Princess Atta when Hopper tries to fly away with him, Flik lures Hopper back to the nest where the mother bird approaches Hopper who mistakes her for another fake and attempts to taunt her until she squawks loudly in his face. Realizing it is a real bird, Hopper tries to escape, but the bird is faster than him and she captures him by feeding him to her three newborn chicks for his demise.
Personality[]
The Bird is portrayed as neither good nor bad. Like most birds, she is normally a natural predator who hunts for food when she's hungry. At the near end, she feeds Hopper to her newborn chicks when they hatch.
Appearance[]
She is a bird with small finch with orange and yellow feathers, but from the insects' perspective.
Trivia[]
- While the bird is capable of attacking the heroes, the reason the bird is not a villain is because she just does so in order to survive and to help feed her chicks.
