The Brachydios are a species that appears in the fantasy videogame, Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate. It is a territorial and belligerent Brute Wyvern that mainly inhabits volcanic regions and is notorious for its symbiosis with an explosive slime mold, which it grows on its body and slathers around the arena to empower its attacks with powerful explosions and set up hazardous traps.
Appearance[]
The shimmering green slime covering its horn and "fists," together with its gleaming armored skin with many plates and ridges composed of obsidian, are all telltale signs of Brachydios. Brachydios has two long, highly developed forelimbs that it employs as its main defense mechanism, unlike other Brute Wyverns. It is true that Brachydios has claws on its forearms, however they are hidden beneath and appear to have little use in combat, despite what one may think.
Abilities[]
Brachydios has a symbiotic association with an enigmatic green slime mold that covers its forelimbs and horn. Brachydios may leave a pool of its slime mold on the ground or on its victim by smashing it with its fists or horn. Once the slime mold separates from the monster's body, it immediately goes through a strong chemical reaction and explodes violently. When the slime eventually runs out, Brachydios may "prime" the mucus with its saliva to make more of it. The substance itself is very sticky; if a monster's fist or horn assault lands squarely on a hunter, it will stick to the hunter's body and finally burst. Hunters can roll or use deodorant to get rid of the material. Notably, Brachydios is significantly more nimble than other Brute Wyverns, utilizing its horn and fists to quickly batter opponents. It can also leap great distances with its strong hind legs. Its shell is also incredibly resilient, allowing it to survive both outside attacks and explosions of its own.
Brachydios glows brilliant yellow and orange when he is angry, and his fists, horn, and body ridges all show this trait. Attacks that would normally leave a slime puddle will burst into flames the moment they hit in this state.
Behavior[]
Brachydios are ferocious creatures that will attack whatever they see as a danger. Because of their fierce territoriality, they frequently eject other monsters from their domain to create more space for themselves. It is also known to be a powerful carnivore that will not hesitate to eat weaker large monsters if given the chance, though it prefers eating small herbivores. It has also been seen occasionally consuming ores.
Brachydios are known for being rather poor parents: while they allow their young to roam their territories, fending off predators with their presence, they exhibit zero parental care. These young Brachydios often inherit their slime molds from dollops dropped by their parents, though they can often get killed from the explosions resulting from handling thanks to their weaker hides.
