The Carnival Barker is a minor antagonist in the 2010 Illumination film Despicable Me. He is the greedy barker from Super Silly Land who runs the rigged Space Killer game.
He is voiced by Jack McBrayer.
Why isn't he heroic or villainous?[]
- While he likely rigged the Space Killer game so the players can't succeed and he could keep earning money, his most infamous actions of mocking Gru and Agnes over failing to knock over the UFO amount to just standard, mischievous jerk behavior, making him more of a mere bully rather than a villain.
Biography[]
The Carnival Barker runs the Space Killer game at Super Silly Land. When Agnes wants the stuffed unicorn from the stand, Gru asked the Barker, annoyed, how much it cost. The man replies that it is not for sale but that it is a prize to be won if the children play his game and knock the spaceship over.
Gru then pays him and Agnes strikes the ship without dropping it. Gru, puzzled, complains that she lost if she hit the spaceship. The carnival barker again explains to him that he must knock over the ship to win and makes fun of him for not getting the unicorn. He wryly points out Gru's disappointment before sarcastically wishing Agnes luck for the next move. Gru, intolerant, pays him again, announcing his own turn, steps back and takes out his Big Blaster Cannon.
The barker, frightened, bends down and Gru shoots violently at the spaceship which is left in crumbs after being charred. His entire game being destroyed, the barker, scandalized, gave the unicorn plush to Agnes before bursting into tears.
Personality[]
Although playful in his stand, he is shown to be sarcastic and mischievous. He seems to like making fun of others when they lose at his game, which is shown when he speaks with Gru and sarcastically wishes Agnes "good luck" for next time.
When Gru revealed a large ray gun and used it to win the challenge, a scared Barker gave Agnes a stuffed unicorn out of the fear that her adoptive father would use it again and burst into tears upon seeing that his stand was destroyed.
Trivia[]
- There's the possibility that the Carnival Barker was rigging his game so that it would be almost impossible for participants to knock over the spaceship so he could make himself more money and to prevent customers from winning the prizes and forcing the customers to start over all again.
- The Carnival Barker was the inspiration for the Barker costume in Minion Rush.
