The caterpillar, later known as butterfly, is a character that appears in the 1944 animated short Springtime for Pluto.

Appearance[]

As a caterpillar, he had a small, long body with green fur, two red antennas on his head, big black eyes and a black nose, he had four arms with white gloves and four legs with white shoes.

As a butterfly, she has a female humanoid body with brown skin, black hair and brown eyes, she wears a pink dress with matching high-heeled sandals, she has pink wings with a violet circle in each one and a red circle surrounding them, she also retains her antennas.

Personality[]

As caterpillar, he had an exuberant, excitable personality. He enjoyed the coming of Spring so much that started belting out in song to the point of being unaware that he had attracted the attention of a small quail. He also appears to be easily frightened and angered, as his reactions to seeing the quail and his vengeful kicking of hte quail seem to attest to.

As a butterfly, she is confident and sexy. She seems quite pleased with how her transformation turned out, so much so that she seems to dance for Pluto's entertainment as thanks for letting him transform on his tail, even forgiving the fact that he had previously tried to help the quail eat her when she was still a caterpillar. When she first emerges, she seems a bit shy and disoriented, but upon noticing Pluto, seems to enjoy the attention her seductive form elicits.

Biography[]

The caterpillar is singing in his burrow when he catches the attention of Pluto and a quail chick. While singing, the caterpillar comes out from his burrow and notices the quail, who tries to eat him. Pluto attempts to help the quail pull the caterpillar out of his burrow by biting down on the quail's tail, which painfully stretches the caterpillar. The quail's tail feathers give out, which causes the tension in the caterpillar's stretched-out body to release, pulling the quail along with it and causing the quail to be stuck in the burrow. Seeing the quail's butt plugging up the entrance of his burrow, the caterpillar kicks him out of there. Then, the caterpillar digs another hole out of the ground and finds Pluto's tail, climbing up it to make his cocoon while singing, while Pluto listens and watches, intrigued. When the cocoon is complete, Pluto, out of curiosity, wags his tail, shaking the cocoon wildly, eliciting rattling noises from within. When Pluto stops shaking the cocoon, he takes a closer look at the cocoon, at which point the cocoon begins writhing and the caterpillar emerges, now having transformed into a sexy butterfly woman. At first, she seems shy and coy, but when she notices Pluto, she smiles at him, as if grateful that he let her use his tail to undergo her metamorphosis. Pluto is seduced by her attractive appearance, and sensing his interest, the butterfly decides to thank him by dancing, first with her body still partially wrapped in the cocoon, then by flying around his face, then by dancing on his muzzle towards his eyes, and finally on a sunflower to entertain Pluto. After the dance she was never seen again.

Why the Character Isn't Heroic or Villainous?[]

  • In the short the caterpillar/butterfly did nothing heroic or villainous.
    • Although he first kicks the quail out of his burrow it was out of self-defense, and although he makes his cocoon in Pluto's tail without asking, this wasn't a bad action and Pluto did nothing to stop him.
    • While as a butterfly she befriends Pluto and takes joy with him, she did nothing that could help him.
