The Chameleos are a species that first appear in the science fantasy videogame, Monster Hunter 2. They are mysterious and highly intelligent Elder Dragons that are infamous for their ability to turn nearly invisible. Despite their mischief and comical dispositions, they are still incredibly powerful like other monsters of their classification and thus, are often hunted whenever they show up near human civilisation in order to protect civilians.
Why aren’t they heroic or villainous?[]
- They are mainly minding their own business until the hunter comes.
- Although occasionally destructive, this is all animal behavior rather than malice.
Physiology[]
The Chameleos is covered mainly in a purple hide with a white underbelly, with the tip of its nose bearing an outgrowing horn at the end of its skull. Its eyes are big and spherical, like those of a genuine chameleon, and it can move them independently. The tongue is elastic and long enough to reach out and steal objects at a distance. It uses its purple wings, which have a grayish white membrane, for both flying and directional control of its poisonous fog. The huge tail of the chameleos has a spiraling tip that curls like a leaf, and has numerous glowing blue appendages.
Abilities[]
By refracting light in the mist and exploiting the electric currents flowing through its skin, Chameleos may effectively blend in with its surroundings and make its body invisible. If its tail and horn are cut, it loses the ability to blend in. Chameleos's breath, which is known for producing mist to protect, has the ability to make poisonous clouds that can be deadly as well as dense fog that can impede vision. Although the Anti-Theft skill can stop it, the extending tongue is skilled at stealing goods from hunters. It can also vomit forth gas that causes weariness that lowers stamina and acid blobs that weaken defense. Like Kushala Daora's wind barrier, it can create high pressure wind by fanning its tail. In Kamura, Chameleos can lick up pollen from a hunter’s Petalace, removing the buffs applied to them and applying them to itself.
Behavior[]
When in combat, Chameleos sometimes exhibit a nervous and skittish demeanor that leaves hunters somewhat unprepared. It will continuously attempt to steal things and poison hapless hunters throughout this strange behavior. It is said to be calm and to avoid fighting until absolutely required in rare occurrences.
In the wild, Chameleos is an insectivore, often seen catching Neopterans with its prehensile tongue and being witnessed destroying insect nests to lap up stragglers. It also feeds on the nectar of certain flowers on occasion to give itself buffs. However, it seems to have no problem preying on other animals like humans, with one of its introduction cutscenes appearing to be an attempt to eat the hunter. It's also implied that Chameleos was responsible for devouring an entire village of people, making it a dangerous monster to civilians especially when combined with its natural curiosity and poisonous breath. Interestingly, Chameleos is sighted consuming ores on a less frequent basis than other Elder Dragons, implying that it doesn’t heavily rely on minerals to control its powers.
Habitat[]
Tropical and subtropical regions, such as jungles, forests, and hills, are home to Chameleos. It has been observed in the Swamp on occasion.
Trivia[]
- Chameleos was voted as the 62nd most popular monster in the Hunters' Choice Poll.
- Thanks to its large nasal horn, Chameleos appears to be based off Jackson's Chameleon, with its tail drawing inspiration from leaf geckos.
- A common joke within the community is that Chameleos is actually in every single game, it's just that it chooses not to engage with the hunter and remains invisible.
