Class 40 is an antagonist from Rev. W. Awdry's Railway Series and the Thomas & Friends episode "Bowled Out". He was an arrogant Diesel Engine brought to fill in for Stepney who was heading off the island of Sodor.
In the UK Dub he was voiced by the late Michael Angelis and by the late George Carlin in the US Dub.
Why isn't He heroic or villainous?[]
- He's just a big snob and not an active threat. The most damage he does is to the inspectors hat.
Biography[]
When he is brought in to fill in for Stepney on his last day on Sodor He was rude to the Steam Engines who were there Being frustrated with him after saying that they should be scrapped and replaces with other Diesel Engines like him. Later as he was getting ready to pull some express coaches, the wind blew the inspectors hat into Class 40 as he sucked it in during his air in take. Before he could move to get to his coaches he broke down after he sucking in and ruining the Inspector's hat. He later left the scene without saying goodbye.
Appearance[]
He is as his name suggests a British Railways Class 40 Diesel Engine. He is dark green and yellow with a rectangle face with silver buffers.
Personality[]
He is a rather rude and narcissistic Diesel Engine who feels great pride in the fact. He believes he is better then the Steam team because he is a Diesel Engine. Despite this, in the magazine stories, there are some occasions in which the Diesel is polite and helps out the steam engines.

- In the Series, he is never referred to as his given name.
- He was originally going to by the main antagonist of Thomas and The Magic Railroad before being replaced by Diesel 10.
- The real D261 was blue.
- He has a cross face that was never used.
- The real D261 was scrapped.
- There has never been a Diesel Engine with the number 4711.
