Claude Huggins is a minor figure in the Team Fortress 2 comics. He is the cowardly founder of the town of Hugginsville, which later became Teufort. In the comics and other game material, his image was only seen in a statue and as printed on a coin, the latter being used for the Bronze Gun Mettle Campaign Coin in-game. His sculpted depictions show him to be a lanky, aged man with a mustache and wide-brimmed hat that he'd pull down when cowering.
Claude Huggins' statue was featured in the comic Unhappy Returns, but he was first identified by name in the subsequent comic, A Cold Day in Hell. Huggins was also potentially referenced in the Left 4 Dead series, his name dropped in graffiti. This Huggins was accused of being a coward, much like his TF2 counterpart, and was said to have let his children die, also harkening to his backstory.
Biography[]
Claude Huggins was an American pioneer by the early 1840's, and had a legacy of being a coward who hid at every sign of danger (evidently behind or under his own horse most of the time), to the detriment of those close to him. By 1847, he and his wife set out with a band of pioneers to build a town in the Badlands of New Mexico. However, they were attacked by a bear, who slaughtered every last one of the pioneers, including Huggins' wife. However, Huggins himself survived by hiding under his wife's corpse as the bear mauled it, waiting until the animal left.
Too scared to leave the spot, Huggins decided to establish his town there, building it atop his wife's skeleton. He named the town Hugginsville, and began accepting other settlers as citizens, presumably being the town's first mayor. However, later in 1847, a group of teenage bullies wandered into Hugginsville and began bullying Huggins, forcing him to rename the town to "Two Farts". The bullies eventually left, but Huggins was still too scared to change it back out of fear that they'd return, so he made some slight alterations to the name to make it less offensive, re-christening the town to "Teufort", which it remained well after the Gravel Wars over a century later.
Huggins presumably resided in Teufort until his death. Despite his well-publicized cowardly nature, he became a fairly popular figure among the people of Teufort, who erected a statue to his "proud legacy of hiding" in the town's center, depicting him crouched in fear next to his horse. He also appeared to have gained national fame for his cowardice, as the same image of him cowering under his horse was printed on US half-dollar coins by the late 1960s. However, during the Gravel Wars between RED and BLU in 1968-1971, the 2fort facility next to the town began leaking lead into its water supply, reducing the populace to lead-poisoned idiots, and ended up erecting the Town Square City Dump around Huggins' statue, surrounding it with garbage.
Huggins may have also been a doctor, as a hidden image linked to the game's 2011 Uber Update depicted a barely legible box that appeared to read "Dr. Claude Huggins DECEASED".
Why he isn't heroic or villainous?[]
- As only a background historical character with no speaking roles, we cannot discern much about him other than his well-known cowardice and implications of skills given his positions, actions, and legacy.
- On the only two occasions where he faced an adversary, he displayed nothing but cowardice to save himself. This may not have been malicious, even when it cost the life of his wife and fellow settlers, but he clearly isn't a hero.
