Darrell Waltrip's 1977 Chevrolet Monte Carlo served as the model for Darrell. He has a chrome paint job and a flame pattern on the front that extends up into the hood. He features chrome rims, a black grille, and yellow headlights. His old racing number, "17," is painted in yellow on both his roof and side. Since both the Husker Morocco and Stodgey Suaver EX designs are based on the NASCAR design of the Chevrolet Monte Carlo, they share many of his characteristics.

Darrell and Bob Cutlass discuss the 2005 Dinoco 400 in Cars. The King, Chick Hicks, and Lightning McQueen are introduced to the crowd at the beginning of the race by Darrell and Bob. They inform them that the three vehicles are tied with a total score of 5,013 points and that the Piston Cup will be awarded to the winner. They are horrified by the 33-vehicle collision that Chick Hicks produced, and they are even more stunned when McQueen skillfully dodges the collision to escape getting hit. Darrell and Bob are thrilled, chatting excitedly as they try to decide who will win when the race ends in the first-ever three-way tie in Piston Cup history.
Darrell and Bob also provide commentary on the race that is held at the Los Angeles International Speedway to decide the real winner in a tie-breaker. To their amazement, they discover that McQueen's crew leader is the Fabulous Hudson Hornet. Later, Darrell remarks on McQueen's decision to give up the victory in order to assist The King, saying that he's giving him a bump draft after his collision with Chick Hicks, who is later booed by a mob of angry fans who were furious on what he did to The King.
Cars 2[]
Miles Axlerod chooses Darrell Cartrip, together with David Hobbscap and Brent Mustangburger, to present the World Grand Prix in Cars 2. In contrast to the others, he is still the humorous announcer and is still his jittery self.
Cars 3[]
Darrell and Bob make their comeback to reveal the 2016 and 2017 Piston Cup seasons in Cars 3. They frequently draw attention to Lightning McQueen, Bobby Swift, and Cal Weathers' friendship. - Darrell is modeled after a 1977 Chevrolet Monte Carlo, which Waltrip used that year.
- Darrell's die-cast is light gray. This differs from his appearance in the films, where he is of a solid blue color tone.
- On the back of the the die-cast toy reads DWstore.com, which is a real website selling Darrell Waltrip-related merchandise such as T-shirts. While Darrell Cartrip’s rear end is not seen in Cars, the inscription is visible on him in Cars 2, despite it being a real-world reference to Waltrip.
- Darrell Cartrip does not know Mater in Cars 2, even though he does in Cars: The Videogame. The reason for this is unknown, making this a plot hole within the viewer's mind in the Cars franchise to debate its canonicity.
- In Cars 2, the Lightyear lettering font on his tires are blacked out, but the font changed back to the proper white letters in Cars 3.
