The Delinquent Road Hazards or Tuner Cars are the secondary antagonists of Pixar's 7th full-length animated feature film Cars.

They are a group of four cars who intentionally cause danger on the highway: Boost (Hot Pink neon/silver 1995 Mitsubishi Eclipse GSX with a custom body kit resembling Replica cars, voiced by Jonas Rivera), Devon "DJ" Montgomery Johnston III (neon blue customized/slammed 2004 Scion XB/Geo Tracker three-door SUV, voiced by E.J. Holowicki), Wingo (green neon/green and purple 2000 Nissan Silvia Spec (S15), voiced by Adrian Ochoa), and Snot Rod (orange neon 1970 Dodge Challenger R/T with a blower, voiced by Lou Romano).

They do not seem to be aware of the noise they cause and are not afraid of danger. Story[]

Cars[]

The Tuner Cars appear for the first time speeding past other cars on the road during the night. They meet a sleepy Mack, who is transporting Lightning McQueen to California, who failed to realize he was risking causing Mack to become asleep at a wheel. DJ, knowing that Mack is feeling exhausted, activates a soft music (Songbird by Kenny G) which puts the truck to sleep while Boost and Wingo play with Mack by passing each other. They knock Mack on a barrier on the freeway and Lightning gets out of the trailer while he too was sleeping. That's when Snot Rod sneezes as his friends speed up and Mack wakes up unaware that he left McQueen in the middle of the road.

During the end credits, the Tuner Cars storm into the town of Radiator Springs and are stopped by the Sheriff who locks them behind a gate and boots them. As punishment, they have to tow Bessie as Lightning did to fix a road and are squirted with liquid tar on their bodywork to their disgust. It could still be heavily implied that they would still get off scot-free since they were able to fix the road instead of being given a lifetime prison sentence by Doc.

Cars: The Video Game[]

In Cars: The Video Game, which takes place after the movie (if the viewer considers it canon), the tuners refuse to let Lightning pass a certain area in Tailfin Pass. Challenging them to a three-lap race, Lightning says they'll let him pass if he wins, and to throw down one of Boost's boost tanks. They ultimately lost to Lightning, and Boost gives up one of his boost tanks, telling Lightning that it's not over between them, in which they leave. Later on, looking for an opportunity for revenge, Chick hires them to rob Lightning's gear from Mack during a drive on the Interstate. They ultimately succeeded in doing so by putting him to sleep, though Mack would notify Sheriff about the robbery after being woken up by Snot Rod's sneeze, which Lightning goes after them, driving on the wrong side of the Interstate, getting their gear back. The tuners would later be locked up in the Impound once more, and later confess to Sheriff & Lightning that the robbery was not their idea, it was Chick's, which Wingo describes him as "some green race car with a mustache". They are never shown again afterwards, which implies that they may have either been sent to prison or still got off scot-free if they learned their lesson and stopped being illegal street racers.

Cars Toons: Tokyo Mater[]

At Flo's V8 Cafe, Sheriff pulls up when three of the Tuner Cars, Boost, DJ and Wingo drift past. As Sheriff races after them, Mater says that he used to be an import. He then tells Lightning McQueen what happened.

When Mater is celebrating after winning the race, we see DJ dancing to the music.

Cars 2: The Video Game[]

The Tuner Cars are downloadable playable characters.

Spinned[]

Ramone says to DJ to put the music when Guido stars to Spinning

Cars: Lightning League[]

In the Cars 3 mobile game DJ is the only character unlockable that appears in the game

Disney Parks[]

Out of the cars, only DJ appears in Cars Land at Disney California Adventure, where he plays songs for the guests as part of hosting his daily dance activity, DJ's Dance n Drive. This show and DJ himself would be relocated to Disney's Hollywood Studios as additional entertainment outside Lightning McQueen's Racing Academy.

DJ also appears in Paint the Night Parade in Hong Kong Disneyland and Disney California Adventure riding on Mack's fold-deck until 2020 (before Covid) as he spinning his wild music, he will be replaced by Sheriff since 2023 as arresting him.

Trivia[]

  • It was thanks to their intervention during Lightning's trip to California that the runner was able to change his personality and meet new friends. Since if they haven't tricked Mack into falling asleep & get McQueen lost at all, McQueen would never end up in Radiator Springs where he would be taught humility and how friendship is more important in life than racing and winning. Along with the fact that McQueen would win the Piston Cup and gain fame. This makes Radiator Springs neglected much more forever and also however, McQueen would still be cocky and arrogant due to wanting to win the Piston Cup, which he gave up on after having ended up at Radiator Springs and learning life lessons from them.
  • Some assume they were sent by Chick Hicks to get McQueen to be lost while heading to California and for Chick to be the first to sympathize with Dinoco. They continue causing trouble after Chick obtains the Piston Cup, however.
  • In Italian dub, Boost and DJ are voiced respectively by F1 racers Giancarlo Fisichella and Jarno Trulli (who were racing for Renault and Toyota at the time the film was released), while Wingo is dubbed by 24 Hours of Le Mans racer Emanuele Pirro.
  • Snot Rod was supposed to be in the unmade Cars Toons episode, Import Mater. This episode was later remade into Tokyo Mater, in which he didn't appear.
    • Ironically, Snot Rod is the only Delinquent Road Hazards member to appear in Cars: Mater-National Championship.
    • Snot Rod also appears on a calendar in Andy's room in Toy Story 3 as a normal car.
  • Wingo was the only Delinquent Road Hazards member that was playable in Arcade Mode in Cars: The Video Game, despite Boost and DJ being playable in the High Speed Heist minigame.
  • A repainted, non-anthropomorphic version of Boost could be seen on a poster on the wall of Andy's room in the trailer of Toy Story 3. This poster was replaced in the final movie by a picture of Finn McMissile.
  • While DJ's license plate states that his hometown is Treble Town,[citation needed] Tokyo Mater depicts him as one of Tokyo's residents, making it unclear where DJ's true town of origin is.
  • DJ's original die-cast depicted him with blue stripes rather than green. This was corrected in 2009, but the incorrect striping returned on his 2015 re-release.
  • The song DJ plays in his introduction is "Rollin' in the Rearview" by Headbone and Jabu; he later plays "Songbird" by Kenny G to put Mack to sleep.
  • Despite being an antagonist, DJ is considered to be friendly to the theme park guests at Cars Land.
