The Deviljho are a species that appears in the fantasy videogame, Monster Hunter 3. They are a species of nomadic Brute Wyvern notorious for their incredible strength and ravenous appetites, leading to them frequently depopulating areas they enter from their sheer hunger. Thus, hunters are often sent after them to prevent populations of monsters being unsustainably depleted by a Deviljho's appetite.
Why aren’t they heroic or villainous?[]
- Although highly destructive, what they do is animal instinct rather than malice.
Physiology[]
A massive, bipedal Brute Wyvern with a muscular upper body, Deviljho is distinguished by its consistent shade of forest green. Its small, sharp spines, which grow to their greatest height along the back and tail, are scattered throughout its thick coat. With a broad lower jaw and several rows of teeth extending from the mouth, Deviljho has a small nose and a huge lower jaw. While its forelegs are small and underdeveloped and are hardly used, its rear legs are big and muscular. Deviljho has scars visible when he is furious due to a significant swelling of his back and shoulder muscles. A brilliant red hue will appear in certain regions of its skin during this phase.
Abilities[]
Deviljho possesses incredibly strong muscles that give it unmatched physical power and endurance. Its formidable jaws are noteworthy because they have the ability to fling and pick up heavy things, including prey, and deliver bone-crunching bites to potential targets. Furthermore, its strong hind legs enable it to leap great distances in the direction of prey and sprint at a fairly fast pace. Deviljho can shoot a stream of a mystery, cloudy discharge out of his lips at victims when he is furious. This material may be extremely lethal to monsters and hunters alike since it includes the Dragon Element.
Behavior[]
The Deviljho is a migratory creature that frequently travels great distances in pursuit of food. It can annex the territory of any monster that gets in its way since it is a super-predator. Deviljho's rapid metabolism means that it needs food to survive, thus it's constantly looking for it. It will even try to kill and consume whatever it comes across. It consumes victims alive in order to save as much time as possible regaining its energy, and it is known to be cannibalistic. In battle, the Devlijho will often hold onto whatever monster it was trying to hunt earlier, using the unlucky creature to bash and pummel its victims. This behaviour isn't an example of tool use though, and is merely a side effect of the Deviljho refusing to risk losing its prey. The only time when a Deviljho isn't aggressive is during the mating season. When two mating individuals meet, they will release a special pheromone that calms them down and reduces their appetites, allowing them to mate peacefully and part ways.
Habitat[]
Deviljho is known to live in a broad range of habitats, including tundra, deserted islands, volcanoes, and has even been observed as far as the New World, due to its migratory lifestyle. Its presence frequently disturbs the natural ecology to the point of creating localized extinction events due to its enormous hunger.
Trivia[]
- Thanks to their green colorations, tubular bodies and bumpy textures, Deviljho are often jokingly called pickles by the community, with this meme being acknowledged by the series' developers themselves.
- A popular myth in the Monster Hunter community is that the Deviljho eats its tail if it’s detached in battle. This has been proven false however, as no video evidence for such a behaviour has ever been documented.
