Free the End.
~ The game implying that the Ender Dragon's presence on The End was something negative.

The Ender Dragon is one of the main antagonists of the Minecraft franchise.

She's a predatory ender creature who's hinted to be the unsavory ruler of The End.

Why isn’t she heroic or villainous?[]

  • The Ender Dragon, due to Minecraft's largely ambiguous nature, is never outright said to be a tyrant or dictator of The End, as she only attacks the player when they trespass into her dimension. Her heightened aggression towards the player, however, comes across as a legendary animal attempting to kill its weaker prey. In addition to her eagerness to fight, there's also the fact that Endermen go out of their way to fight the Dragon should it damage them in some way, hinting at its possible tyranny over them.

Appearance[]

The Ender Dragon is a black, draconian creature with purple eyes and grey back ridges.

History[]

Minecraft[]

The Ender Dragon is a hostile creature that's sometimes recognized as the primary enemy of Minecraft's End level (or the entire game). It's said to be the game's "final" boss. She was introduced in the game when it was formally released for PC in 2011.

When a player enters the realm known as the End, a large dragon known as the Ender Dragon attacks them. She only acts violently toward the player and has 200 health points (about 100 hearts). She mostly strikes by diving down and slamming the player, but she can also fire Dragon Fireballs that burst on impact and leave a patch of particles that do damage akin to a Lingering Potion of Harming when they hit the ground while flying about. A purple dragon breath attack that drops on the ground and delivers damage like the Dragon Fireballs is periodically fired by her as she dives down to the bedrock structure in the midst of the End. Additionally, a bottle can be used to store this dragon breath.

The player must first kill Endermen to obtain 12 or 13 Ender Pearls, then kill Blazes in the Nether to obtain Blaze Rods (which may then be converted into Blaze Powders), in order to acquire the ingredients needed to create the Eye of Ender. The player must now find the Stronghold in order to engage in the "final" battle with the hostile overworld hordes after finally crafting the required number of Eye of Enders. The player may now fill up the end portal with the appropriate number of ender eyes and then must go to the End dimension to battle the dragon once the surrounding hostile mobs have been eliminated and the silverfish spawner has been destroyed.

Because the End Crystals atop the tall obsidian pillars that border the main End Island regenerate her health as she approaches them, the Ender Dragon is a tremendously challenging boss. By striking these crystals, you may destroy them, but doing so will cause a big explosion that will hurt you severely. The Endermen won't murder the player if they also have a pumpkin on their head since they can't look them in the eyes. It is advised to take on the Dragon after destroying the Crystals.

When the Ender Dragon passes away, she glides upwards and makes a tremendous noise as her body shatters and rays of light fly out of her. Then, in the center of the main island, she will produce a dragon egg on top of the exit bedrock portal and drop a ton of experience.

By placing Ender Crystals in the center of the bedrock portal's four sides, which will close the portal and bring back the Ender Crystals on the pillars before the beams shoot up into the air and bring back the Ender Dragon, it was possible to resurrect the Ender Dragon up until update 1.9.

Minecraft: Story Mode[]

In this Telltale Games installment of the franchise, Jean appears as a minor background antagonist in one of the game's flashbacks, one where the Old Order of the Stone assassinates her, albeit through the use of a command block, which they lied about, thus giving them the notoriety that paved the way for their careers.

Minecraft Dungeons[]

Statues of the Ender Dragon appear in the game, implying that it boasts a sort of cultural significance in the Minecraft world, likely as a popular stock character/antagonist, legendary creature, or even a historic beast.
