Stalkers exploring the Zone on their own. Most stalkers work this way since being a member of a group takes precious time, and part of the loot. Then there are some who simply prefer solitude and independence.
~ Encyclopedia

The Free Stalkers commonly known as the Loners (Rus. Одиночки; Uk. Одинаки) are the titular main protagonists in the Ukrainian FPS Survival Horror franchise S.T.A.L.K.E.R.. The Loners is a decentralized organization consisting of people who aren't members of any other fraction and mostly acting alone or in small groups of non-permanent members.

History[]

The first people appeared somewhere in 2009 and started to call themselves "stalkers". They were collecting artifacts - anomalies with different features, that can be sold with a high price. Many stalkers started to gather into small groups creating basis for large stalker clans.

In the following years the stalkers started to build different fractions with different ideas and goals. However, the vast majority still decides to work alone or in small groups. Only, occasionally, gathering into groups, and gangs.

In 2011, the Bandits, organized by Yoga into a fraction took over Garbage. They started demand payment for trespassing and activities on their territory, essentially, attempting hegemony, which mostly affected the local diggers. Yoga's people, attacked and intimidated the diggers into submission, going as far as creating a concentration camp and enslaving many of the stalkers, forcing them to search artifacts for them. The Loners had to unite under Father Valerian's leadership into a huge clan to defeat Yoga and the bandits, sparking the event known as the "Fraction War". The Fraction War between the Loners under Father Valerian and the Bandits under Yoga ended in, essentially, nothing. Both bases were destroyed, both leaders disappeared and both clans stopped their existence, turning back into the scattered, decentralized form they were before, except for the Bandits that were reorganized to an another gang by their former barman.

In 2012, the Loners remained a decentralized fraction, with very few major groups. The favorite Loners' pastime became the newly opened Bar "100 Rads", owned by a Trader named the Barkeep. "100 Rads" became the first safe house in the whole Zone, where stalkers could trader artifacts, get quests and just relax.

At one point, a Loner named Strelok, shut down the Brain Scorcher, thus opening a path to the legendary central of the Zone. Every experienced stalker, for every fraction, rushed to the center to explore the legendary city of Pripyat or to seek the so-called "sea of artifacts".

Upon grounding in the center, stalkers, inspired by "100 Rads" success, created a two safe houses, so stalkers could trade, take quests and, most importantly, mortal enemies could take a break from their endless war: Skadovsk, on Zaton, where Loners and Bandits kept their shaky neutrality; Yanov Station, in Jupiter, where Duty and Freedom passively fought for control.

Depending on the players' choices, the fate of the safe houses can either remain the same or change.

Ranks & Structure[]

The Loners due to being a decentralize organization doesn't have a rank and a structure. However, the Loners can be divided into between various occupations they take part in:

Stalker-For-Hire: It's a type of Loners that work for money, searching artifacts, cleaning up mutants and sometimes even playing a role of an assassin. They just "cheaper" mercenaries

Hunters: One of the most common occupations. Mutants has a huge demand between Merchants that are selling them on the "big land" and Scientists, since it's these are valuable objects of study. Sometimes they're hired for cleaning up nests of mutants.

Diggers: Just like the traditional stalking and hunting, diggering is a common activity. Diggers are exploring abandoned underground facilities. and digging up contaminated sites. Diggers are fascinated by Garbage, since it has a lot of machinery that was abandoned during the events of 1984
