“ | And the things that met the serpent prince’s eyes from the throne were the King’s eyes. Eyes filled with fear and suspicion. {…} While on a royal visit… the King was thrown to his death when his mount suddenly went berserk. | „ |
~ Ganishka’s thinking back about his disorderly relationship between him and his father, and how he killed him. |
Ganishka’s Father is a minor and brief character in the dark fantasy manga series, Berserk. He was the king of the Kushan Empire before his son Ganishka deliberately stole the throne away from him, due to the both of them having grown fearfully suspicious of one another.
Appearance[]
Most of his features remained hidden due to him having been presented in a silhouette-type artstyle. But he appeared to be a middle-aged man of a large height, with a black beard that pointed to the sides. Being of Kushan origin, he would also generally have the appearance of someone from the South Asian ethnic group, (Indian to be more specific).
Being a member of the Kushan monarchy, he wore many luxurious pieces of garment. Such as two arm bands, a necklace, and a large stomach chain. Which were all made out of expensive materials, such as gold and various gemstones. His crown appeared as a turban that pointed upwards in a bulbous form. It had numerous fledge-like crests on it with gems in them.
Personality[]
Ganishka’s Father was presented as a frightened and paranoid man that tragically became fearful of his own son, because of Ganishka's constant assassinations towards his closest people, due to their traitorous nature which many exhibited towards him. Despite this, it has never been implied that Ganishka’s Father was ever planning on assassinating his own son in comparison to his wife. And considering that the Kushan Empire was still just a small kingdom and not a large-scale imperialistic force that his son eventually made it out to be, shows that Ganishka’s Father was presumably much more peaceful than his successor, making him very much a victim of his own circumstances.
Story[]
Past[]
Much of the man’s past is unknown, only that he was born into the Kushan royal family. Knowing that the members of the Kushan royalty had a long history of betrayal and bloodshed towards one another in order to obtain the most power. It can be assumed that this man grew up in a similar environment, but he would nonetheless eventually be appointed as the new emperor when his predecessor died.
He would be married off to a noble woman from a neighboring kingdom and had two children with her, Ganishka being the oldest.
When Ganishka was six years old, his mother attempted to assassinate him in order for his younger brother to obtain the throne instead. This caused the young Gansihka to kill his younger brother which then resulted in his mother committing suicide out of grief. While it is unknown what the reaction was of Ganishka’s Father regarding this whole ordeal. It can be assumed that it would kickstart his growing fear and suspicion towards his son.
During the rest of Ganishka’s childhood leading up to his teenage years. Many of the Kushan aristocracy tryied to manipulate and take advantage of the young prince’s status as a member of the royal family to further their own interests, but Ganishka, already being traumatized thru having been betrayed by someone close to him, began assassinating all of these “vipers” in order to keep himself alive. This would cause Ganishka’s Father to become increasingly more frightened of his only remaining heir, believing that he would be his next victim.
When Ganishka was a teenager, he visited his father in royal meeting, but Ganishka’s Father looked at his child with eyes full of dread and distrust. Having made his name as a young “snake prince” that would take out any potential threat against him, which his father was aware of.
Sometime after this, Ganisha’s Father went on a royal visit, but the elephant he was riding on suddenly went Berserk and trampled the king. Ganishka ordered an assassin to use a blow dart against the animal so it would lose its composure. But Ganishka killed the assassin shortly afterwards to cut off any loose ends.
Falcon of the Millennium Empire Arc[]
Many years later, Ganishka has turned himself into an enormous monstrosity so he could hope to battle against Griffith and the God Hand. He starts reflecting back on his past, where he recalled his father’s assassination and fear towards him as one of the many reminders that life to him is nothing more than pure darkness.
