“ | Ash Ketchum: I'm sorry! Gengar's Trainer: Look where you're going! Trainer's Girlfriend: What is it now? You're not still cursed, are you? (giggles) Gengar's Former Trainer: That was more than three years ago. Now, I've got way more luck than I know what to do with and no curse! But when that thing was around, it was awful. I couldn't win a battle and every Pokémon I tried to catch would get away. I fall down the steps and I lose things all the time. No matter what I did, it was nothing but bad luck! Trainer's Girlfriend: Uh, excuse me, but that's why they called it a curse! (Laughs) Gengar's Trainer: But that bringer of bad luck is gone now. I'm the luckiest! After all, its just a Gengar. I shouldn't've caught that thing anyway. |

Gengar's Unnamed Former Trainer is a minor antagonist who appeared in the Anime Pokémon Journeys: The Series, where he had first appeared in the episode "A Chilling Curse!".
He was a Pokémon Trainer who once owned a Gengar that Ash Ketchum would eventually catch. However, three years ago in the TV Series, after growing tired of losing battles and failing to catch other Pokémon, he believed Gengar was responsible for this streak of failures.
As a result, he released Gengar, lying by telling it to wait at the abandoned house. His Gengar obediently waited for his return, even as the location was converted into the Cerise Laboratory for three years.
He was voiced by Tatsuki Kobe in the Japanese version, while also being voiced by Cedric Williams in the English version, Hassan Hamdan in the Arabic version, and by Pablo Argôllo in the Brazilian Portuguese version.
Why Isn't He Heroic or Villainous?[]
- Aside of abandoning his own Gengar and being responsible of why his Gengar became misanthropic, he has not done enough heinous actions to be considered a villain.
- He is shown to be nothing more than a narcissistic, cowardly jerk, with him only showing to be caring for his girlfriend.
Biography[]
In a flashback, it was shown that he used to have a Gengar as one of his Pokémon. However, three years ago in the TV Series, after growing tired of losing battles and failing to catch other Pokémon, he believed Gengar was responsible for this streak of failures and decides to abandon Gengar at a abandoned house to ditch them.
However, in the current time of the Series, Ash Ketchum would bump into the trainer, with the latter rudely telling the former to watch where he's going.
The trainer is also shown to have no remorse for what he did to Gengar, blaming the latter despite having done nothing but showed loyalty to him for the pettiest reasons (i.e: losing Pokémon battles, failing to catch Pokémon, falling down the steps, and constantly losing his belongings) instead of taking his own responsibility, calling Gengar a "curse" and being "bad luck". He would boast all about it to Ash Ketchum, while his girlfriend also is on the Former Trainer's side, agreeing that Gengar is bad luck.
This would cause Gengar to become furious and attack him and his girlfriend in rage at what their former trainer did. When Ash Ketchum tells the Trainer to talk to his Gengar to try to calm the latter down, The Trainer decides still act like a coward and blames all of his own misfortunes on his Gengar, rudely telling to it that he doesn't need him anymore. This causes Goh to gasp in shock and upset Ash Ketchum and Gengar even more for how disrespectful the trainer is, only for the latter to rudely tell Ash to shut up and running away, showing that the trainer still refuse to make up for his wrongdoings.
The Trainer has got little to no comeuppance for his actions of causing Gengar to became misanthropic in the first place, as the Gengar attacked people in embitterment from its abandonment until it was later befriended and captured by Ash as his own Pokémon.
Personality[]
The unnamed trainer is an arrogant, rude, smug, and narcissistic individual who refuses to take responsibility for his own faults and his streak of failures and mishaps, instead blaming his Gengar, who has done nothing but be loyal to him, for the pettiest reasons. (i.e. losing Pokémon battles, failing to catch Pokémon, falling down the steps, and constantly losing his belongings)
He is also shown to be a sore loser as well, as he would complain about losing Pokémon battles and refusing to take responsibility for having bad luck. One night, the trainer would decide to abandon Gengar all because he saw Gengar as "bad luck" and "a curse". The unnamed trainer is shown to be rude to Ash Ketchum as he rudely told Ash to watch where he was going when they bump into each other for the first time.
He is also boastful and smug, as he was willing to brag about how he abandoned his own Gengar, showing no remorse for what he did and leading to Gengar becoming furious and attempting to attack its former trainer and the trainer's girlfriend. He is also shown to be a coward, as he would cower down when he was getting attacked by his own Gengar and treat his own Gengar as something that gives him "bad luck" everywhere he goes.
When Ash tries to tell him to try talk to his Gengar to apologize to it, only for the trainer to tell Ash to shut up and refusing to hold himself accountable and telling his Gengar that he doesn't need him anymore, much to Goh's shock and making Goh's Scorbunny and Ash become appalled of the trainer's cruelty of Gengar. Another example of the trainer's cowardice is that he would cower down when he was attacked by his own Gengar and treat his own Gengar as something that gives him "bad luck" everywhere he goes anytime he sees his Gengar.
However, the unnamed trainer does show to have some care for his girlfriend, as he was shown to be hugging her.
Trivia[]
- The Trainer, despite his cruel neglect and abandonment of his Gengar, is more of an antagonist jerk rather than a Villain due to being considered as not heinous enough.
- The Trainer is the reason why Gengar became misanthropic in the first place, as the Gengar attacked people in embitterment from its abandonment until it was later befriended by Ash, and its eventual capture by Ash.
