Gideon Grey is a supporting character in Disney's 56th animated feature film Zootopia.
Why Isn't He Heroic Nor Villainous?[]
- The worst thing he did are just bullying, stealing tickets and hurting Judy. Although that is a bad doing, still too minor to be villainous, Not to mention he grew out of this behavior as time went on.
- After his redemption as and adult, the best he did is just being nice and apologized.
Biography[]
When Judy Hopps breaches the fourth wall to him during her play and declares her desire to become a police officer, a young Gideon is first seen taunting her. Judy arrives and politely asks that Gideon return the fair tickets to her friends after the performance at a county fair event in Bunnyburrow. He and his black-footed ferret pal, Travis, bully two lambs and a bunny youngster to steal them. Judy kicks Gideon in the face in retaliation when he merely makes fun of the little bunny and pushes her to the ground. Gideon snarls that Judy will always be a "stupid, carrot-farming dumb bunny" and lashes out at her, snatching blood from her cheek.
Unaware that Judy was able to take the tickets from his pocket and give them back to her pals, he departs feeling content. Later in life, Judy's character would unwittingly become centered around Gideon Grey.
When Gideon shows up at the Hopps family farm in his delivery truck fifteen years later, he has grown into a successful baker and, after being motivated by their daughter, a business partner of Bonnie and Stu Hopps. When Gideon sees Judy, he clumsily apologizes for his misbehavior from their childhood, claiming that he was a true jerk and that his self-doubt had led to unbridled anger and hostility. Judy graciously accepts his apologies by acknowledging that she is aware of her own jerkiness.
After that, they hear Bonnie and Stu warn some of Judy's younger siblings to avoid the violet flowers that are growing near their crops. Gideon quips that these flowers are known as "night howlers." Judy discovers that they have a strong psychoactive impact on mammals, including bunnies and all other docile prey, and realizes that the flowers are what are driving the predators insane. Her confused parents and Gideon are left wondering what interested her so much when she frantically reels off what she'd missed and drives to Zootopia in her father's truck. Gideon remarks, "I thought she was talkin' in tongues or somethin'."
