The Glavenus are a species that appears in the fantasy videogame, Monster Hunter Generations. They are Brute Wyverns that are famed for possessing huge, metallic tails resembling swords which they wield in combat. Aggressive and powerful, the appearance of one near any human settlement is a cause for alarm.

Appearance[]

Large and covered in dark crimson scales, Glavenus is a male Brute Wyvern. His back is covered in two rows of blue, skeletal plates that extend from his eyes to his tail. He has more of a cream colored underside. Glavenus is distinguished by his enormous, sword-like tail. In combat Glavenus will rapidly grind his tail on the ground, causing it to glow bright orange. His arms are significantly smaller and less effective in battle, but his rear legs are strong and powerful. Though the body is based on the Tyrannosaurus, the face and jaws are covered in robust plate, especially resembling the skull of a Carnotaurus. While female Glavenus have never been seen in-game, it's presumed that they possess the tail blades males have as they're responsible for teaching their young how to wield them.

Abilities[]

Covered in steely scales, Glavenus's signature weapon is his tail, which is completely covered with metallic blue scutes. Glavenus is extremely adept at utilising this tail in combat, using it akin to a Greatsword, complete with sophisticated footwork to advance on opponents and throw them off. Glavenus can scrape his tail on the ground at high speeds to heat it up, allowing it to burn opponents with the sheer heat emanating from the blade. This process however, dulls the blade, and also causes it to pick up ores and soot from the ground as it's used. Glavenus remedies this by sharpening his tail with his jaws, making it good as new and swallowing any debris accumulated, which is stored in an organ known as the flaming bursa as ammunition for his fire breath.

Glavenus also possesses an incredibly strong bite, as evidenced by his tail-sharpening habits. He is rather strong and durable, able to compete with and fend off the likes of Rathalos and Rathian, and can even rival Deviljho in terms of raw might. So far, Glavenus doesn't seem to have any natural predators other than the ecosystem devouring Nakarkos.

Behaviour[]

In the wild, Glavenus is a powerful apex predator, specialising in large herbivores such as Aptonoth, though he occasionally preys on smaller Bird Wyverns. While he faces competition from monsters occupying the same niche such as the Raths and Agnaktor, he can often fend them off with relative success and is only forced to flee from monsters comparable to Elder Dragons in strength. While territorial, he prefers using threat displays instead of going in for the kill: when sighting the hunter, Glavenus will often roar loudly and send sparks flying from their tails instead of attacking immediately. Glavenus territories are also known to be littered with gash marks.

Glavenus females are known to be highly selective of their mates, only choosing males with the brightest tail colours as they signify a bountiful array of ores in their territory. After mating, Glavenus mothers will lay a singular egg, which the parents both watch after until it hatches, The baby Glavenus, known as "Daggers", are born the size of an Aptonoth. They will stay with their mothers until they're mature enough to go off on their own, learning the art of using their blade tails from their mothers. It is for this reason that Glavenus are seen as some of the most intelligent monsters, as they are capable of complicated swordsmanship and assessing situations before acting violently.

Habitats[]

Glavenus prefers warm environments and can be found in a range of either humid or dry environments. In the Old World, they can be found in forested areas such as the Jurassic Frontier and Jungle, while deserts such as the Dunes and Desert are also prime sites to inhabit. Additionally, thanks to their heat-resistant hide, Glavenus can be found in volcanic areas such as Ingle Isle and the Volcanic Hollow where ore is abundant. Glavenus of the New World show a similar habitat preference, inhabiting the Wildspire Wastes, Ancient Forest, Elders' Recess and Guiding Lands.
