Gore Magala are a species of monsters from the Monster Hunter franchise, that first appear in Monster Hunter 4, with one individual serving as the main antagonist and another serving as the main antagonist of the High Rank campaign of Monster Hunter Wilds. They are monsters of an unknown type that are responsible for spreading the Frenzy Virus, a virus that turns monsters feral and aggressive before killing them, to gain their energy. However, as they're later discovered to be the juveniles of the Shagaru Magala species, they have since been reclassified as Demi-Elders thanks to still lacking certain Elder Dragon features.
Why aren't they heroic or villainous?[]
Physiology[]
As it is in fact, a juvenile Elder Dragon, Gore Magala possesses a hexapodal build vastly different from all other wyverns. It is covered in purplish-black scales, with several reddish spines at the back of its limbs, which each have three toes and one dewclaw. Its back is covered in large scutes while the underside of its tail has several small spines. Its belly is also a greyish purple. Unlike most other Elder Dragons, Gore Magala's wings are incredibly muscular and have a three-taloned thumbed hand on each end, allowing it to use them as additional arms. The membrane of its wings, which is pitch black, is also covered in black hairs on its upper surface, which the Gore Magala uses to scatter the Frenzy Virus. The bottom of these wing membranes are covered in hexagonal scales, with the gaps in between them lighting up with white light when Gore Magala is enraged.
As it hasn't achieved adulthood yet, the Gore Magala has no visible eyes or ears, making it both deaf and blind. Instead, it utilises a pair of antenna-like horns on its head to sense its surroundings, which are capable of erecting and glowing purple when in use.
Abilities[]
In order to perceive their surroundings and create a trail that sticks to predators and prey, Gore Magala releases scales that resemble pollen. These scales allow Gore Magala to detect their prey through heat. Additionally, Gore Magala may spread the infection known as the Frenzy Virus through its volatile breath assaults or by dispersing scale pools across the surrounding region. These scales serve as the vector for this pathogen.
Since Gore Magala lacks eyes, it nearly entirely uses its scales to sense danger. Gore Magala's senses will progressively sharpen as it scatters more scales, and the hue beneath its wings will gradually shift and brighten. It will discharge a lot of scales into the air and unfold two feelers from its head when its senses are at their peak. It will start to walk on all six of the hairs, and the sky will get darker as though there has been an eclipse nearby. Known as the Frenzy condition, this condition is typified by a massive surge of power and aggressiveness from Gore Magala's enhanced perception.
When Gore Magala is not utilizing its Frenzy Virus, it fights mostly with strong slashes and grapples from its strong, clawed wingarms, which are capable of easily taking down big monsters like Goss Harag. Thus, thanks to its viral capabilities and sheer strength, Gore Magala is considered a powerful apex predator, only a step down in strength from its Elder Dragon kin.
Behavior[]
Extremely hostile creatures, Gore Magala will attack almost anything they come across with ferocity. They can, however, be fairly clever as they have been known to harbor resentment toward those who hurt or drive them away, and they can occasionally pretend to be dead in order to get out of perilous circumstances. The former trait can be seen in the individual fought in Monster Hunter 4 as once it matures into a Shagaru Magala, it menacingly eyes the player hunter and performs a display of its might before engaging.
Furthermore, Gore Magala show some strategy in their belligerence as one spotted in the Citadel ambushes a Goss Harag not to kill it, but to infect it as a vector for the Frenzy Virus. When about to molt into a Shagaru Magala, Gore Magalas will become even more belligerent, attacking any that dare to approach them. Gore Magala may also exhibit needlessly hostile behaviour at times, ambushing boats crossing the Great Sea despite them being so far from its turf. After the death of Zoh Shia, a Gore Magala appeared in the Forbidden Lands, infecting the Dragontorch with its Frenzy Virus, causing the Inclemencies to go out of control and a dilute version of the virus to spread throughout the region, causing the Apexes to become quite aggressive. Furthermore, after absorbing the energy of said monsters, Arkveld would go berserk and begin endangering the ecosystem. Thus, it can be seen that when given the opportunity to spread its virus effectively, Gore Magala is an exceptionally dangerous monster to the ecosystem.
Habitat[]
Gore Magala often wander over vast distances to establish a territory for themselves away from others of their kind. As such, they can be found in variable areas like the Ancestral Steppe, Jurassic Frontier, The Citadel, Forest and Hills, Primal Forest, Heaven's Mount, Sanctuary, Everwood, and Ruined Pinnacle. It has recently appeared in the Forbidden Lands, residing within the Iceshard Cliffs.
Trivia[]
- Despite being a juvenile Elder Dragon, Gore Magala lacks the blood compounds that its kin use to resist sleep toxins, allowing it to be captured using traps and Tranquilliser Bombs.
- Furthermore, Gore Magala develops by absorbing biomass from its host as a germ cell before bursting out partially formed, meaning that it's made of assimilated wyvern biomass which lacks the capability to produce such blood compounds.
- Gore Magala is also slightly larger than its adult form, being 22.01 meters long at maximum when compared to Shagaru's 21.87 meter maximum length. This could be due to the sheer volume of scales that Gore Magala sheds to mature, meaning that it doesn't actually molt due to growing in size.
- Gore Magala was voted 5th for the 20th Anniversary Hunters' Choice Poll for Top Monster.
- Despite being hidden under its horns, Gore Magala has rendered eyes in its Monster Hunter Wilds model, possessing red sclerae and yellow irises. This could be a teaser for the future addition of Shagaru Magala, since it's likely said eyes will only be revealed when it molts.
