| ~ Hot Dog Guy and Gumball in "The Awkwardness.” |
Hot Dog Guy is a supporting character in the animated series The Amazing World of Gumball. He's a student at Elmore Jr. High and the victim of an increasingly humiliating rivalry and awkward "friendship" with the main protagonist, Gumball Watterson.
He is voiced by Alex Jordan.
Appearance[]
He is a fairly tall, humanoid hot dog with smooth red skin. He wears a tan-colored bun that wraps around the back and sides, leaving the front exposed. He has thin legs extending from the bottom of the hot dog, which taper to small feet, along with arms coming from either side of his bun, though these end in stubs. On top of his head, there is a slicked-back yellow tuft of mustard resembling hair (later revealed to be a wig). He also wears large black sunglasses.
Personality[]
Hot Dog Guy is a friendly but awkward student with a calm, unassuming personality. He's naturally obliging and tries to be nice to others, initially befriending Gumball and even paying for his lunch out of pity. However, when their friendship becomes exhausting and uncomfortable, he tries to make Gumball hate him through harassment to end things. Outside of his interactions with Gumball, he is usually shown conversing with other friends at school.
He's revealed to have blocked out childhood memories with Gumball due to his struggle with awkward situations. Hot Dog Guy is somewhat insecure, particularly about embarrassing secrets like being born attached to his brothers, which left a scar on his head.
In later episodes, he becomes more honest and level-headed, trying to handle his weird relationship with Gumball in the most reasonable way possible. His aloof, ordinary personality clashes with Gumball's obnoxious and instigatory behavior, leading him to sometimes just avoid interaction altogether. He can be sarcastic, especially with Gumball, whom he insists is more awkward than himself.
Though they eventually try to solve their issues by creating intentionally awkward situations to "reset" their dynamic, Hot Dog Guy maintains clear boundaries about his comfort zone, like panicking and running away when Gumball asks him to undress in the shower.
Biography[]
"The Hug"[]
In the school cafeteria, Gumball tries to prove he's unpredictable to Darwin by randomly hugging Hot Dog Guy, with whom he has never interacted. This creates an awkward social contract where they feel obligated to hug every time they meet. Their encounters become increasingly uncomfortable: they hum together awkwardly as part of each hugging ritual, have an offbeat encounter during school recess, and accidentally hide in the same supply closet trying to avoid each other. They end up having lunch together, and Hot Dog Guy feels obligated to pay for Gumball's lunch before the two reluctantly affirm that they are friends to Rocky.
The two plan then a sleepover, though Darwin and Anais immediately arrange to stay elsewhere. In a tent in Gumball's backyard, things get worse when Hot Dog Guy sleeps and accidentally places his hand on Gumball during the night. Gumball tries to move it but climbs on top of Hot Dog Guy, who wakes up, and they again do their hugging and humming dance.
Having reached a breaking point due to this, they try to break the cycle by ending up in a prank war instead, trying to make themselves hatable to the other to break the "friendship" without being explicitly harsh. They eventually admit they don't actually care about each other, finally communicating, and shake hands in resolution.
The episode ends with Gumball getting revenge on Darwin by having Hot Dog Guy hug him.
"The Awkwardness"[]
Gumball heads to the mall to buy ketchup, but bumps into Hot Dog Guy, causing him to drop his phone. There is a brief synchronization between them where they copy each other's actions awkwardly, and they can't escape each other's presence in trying to walk away. They're forced to ride the same bus and take the same elevator. When the elevator breaks down, they share dark secrets with nothing else to do and temporarily bond, but Tobias ruins the moment by filming them. They get trapped in a bathroom stall together and must work together to escape by climbing the walls.
At the grocery store, they bump into each other again. They both run away in the same direction and accidentally shoplift. A mall cop handcuffs them together, leading to a chase through the mall as they are attached and must work together. After knocking out the officer, they free themselves and pay for their items. Despite the shared adventure, Hot Dog Guy leaves without saying goodbye, as it has still not made them friends or comfortable around each other.
"The Cringe"[]
Gumball and Hot Dog Guy both have to use the school bathroom at the same time, but make each other intensely uncomfortable. They realize they need to do something about it and try to "maximize" awkwardness so that they will be comfortable around each other. This includes exposing themselves in the shower (which backfires when Banana Joe appears), terribly auditioning for “Elmore's Got Talent” (resulting in such cringe they're hospitalized), and Gumball playing Hot Dog Guy's father figure giving “the talk” (causing their faces to literally crumple).
Gumball later finds an old kindergarten photo, revealing they've known each other their whole lives and accumulated years of awkward memories together, hence their current situation. They trap themselves in a box to relive their past and see a lifetime of uncomfortable moments from infancy onward. They manage to erase all their shared memories, allowing them to embrace comfortably for the first time. However, they accidentally fall into another awkward position as the episode ends, which ruins all of their progress.

Notes[]
- ↑ It's revealed in "The Hug" that “Hot Dog Guy” is literally his name instead of an alias.
Trivia[]
- Hot Dog Guy doesn't actually learn what Gumball's name is. He refers to him as the “anonymous, blue stranger” in “The Hug” and “him” during their first encounter in “The Awkwardness.”
