The Lagiacrus are a species that are from the science fantasy videogame franchise Monster Hunter, first appearing as the main antagonist of Monster Hunter Tri. They are a species of Leviathan that possess a powerful control over the Thunder element, using it to hunt prey and defend themselves. As their hunting methods are rather destructive and they can be aggressive, hunters are called to stop them if they become a hazard to humans.

Physiology[]

The Lagiacrus is a huge Leviathan that appears to be a cross between a mosasaur and a crocodilian. It possesses deep blue scales, a light beige underbelly, an orange-tinted finned tail as well as orange claws. It notably has several dermal spikes, two on its head and three pairs on its back, all of which are light beige. When dried out from sunbathing, the Lagiacus’s scales become a light grayish-blue and its horns become browner.

Abilities[]

As the apex predator of many oceans, the Lagiacrus is appropriately endowed with superhuman attributes to pursue and devour prey. While cumbersome on land, it’s noted to be exceptionally graceful and agile in its natural aquatic habitat, being able to pursue smaller prey animals with ease. It is strong enough to crumble stone pillars with a single slam, durable enough to withstand high-caliber explosives used by the Hunter, and resilient enough to keep fighting despite numerous wounds. Lagiacrus also possess the breath capacity to dive for 12 hours at a time.

The Lagiacrus’s most notable power is its control over electricity, which it commands via electrical organs located in its dermal spikes. These allow the Leviathan to channel electricity all over its body, creating an aura of lightning around its body and causing it to leak electricity from its mouth when enraged. While this electricity is fairly short-ranged on land, in the water Lagiacrus can utilise its electricity for projectile attacks.

Behaviour[]

A highly territorial and aggressive Leviathan, Lagiacrus is virtually uncontested over its rule of the sea, fending off rivals such as Rathalos and Rathian with ease and only being preyed on by Nakarkos. An opportunistic and generalist predator, it hunts by creating whirlpools via swimming and shocks any fish sucked in to death. This practice also extends to any seaborne vessels it spots, making Lagiacrus a notorious man-eater. The electricity emitted during this act is what gives the Lagiacrus its name, as it translates to “Shining Vortex” in the tongue of the Mogans that live near its territory.

Habitat[]

As a mainly aquatic creature, Lagiacrus is found most commonly on the Deserted Island and its neighbouring seas, where it was first discovered and maintains its role as apex monster. However, while it shows a preference for saltwater, it can also be found in the Misty Peaks and Flooded Forest, inhabiting the rivers there.

Trivia[]

  • Lagiacrus was voted as the 3rd most popular monster in the 20th Anniversary Hunters' Choice for Top Monster poll, making it the most popular Leviathan.
    • Its theme/ the theme of the Deserted Island "Tremors on Land and Sea" was also nominated in the Hunters' Choice: Top 10 Monster Themes poll.
