The Lala Barina is a species of monster introduced in Monster Hunter Wilds. A type of Temnoceran native to the Scarlet Forest, the Lala Barina builds its nests with a delicate red silk, lacing it with neurotoxins that paralyse any who touch it. During an expedition by the Research Commission into the Scarlet Forest, one of the lead researchers Erik gets captured by one while following it, forcing the hunter to pursue and hunt it down.
Appearance[]
Like other Temnocerans, the Lala Barina is a hexapodal monster that resembles a spider, with four of its digits being longer and acting as legs, while the other two act as its arms. Its abdomen and arms are covered in a soft white fur, while its legs, face and claws have a covering of black carapace instead. Lala Barina's legs possess numerous spines on the joints, while its arms end in three sharp claws. It also has large orange eyes and a pair of chelicerae. Its abdomen not only conceals a stinger but copious amounts of red silk that blossom in a flower-like shape when enraged, leading to its moniker "Thorny Flower Spider".
Abilities[]
Like other Temnocerans, Lala Barina can produce a durable yet lightweight silk from its mouth, which it can use to ensnare prey. In this case, its silk is also laced with a mild paralytic toxin which, while mostly useless with a single dosage, can quickly immobilise a victim when introduced multiple times. As such, Lala Barina lines its lair with elaborate silk webs and throws up clouds of silk florets from its abdomen to increase its chances of immobilising prey.
Aside from its toxins and silk, Lala Barina possesses many sharp spines, claws and stingers, allowing it to shred up prey in a flurry of attacks. It is also surprisingly agile for its size, effortlessly hopping around its prey and befuddling it with a rush of strikes.
Behaviour[]
Like most Temnocerans, Lala Barina is an ambush predator that spends most of its time in its nest, waiting until prey stumbles in before binding them for later consumption. It has been known to be somewhat aggressive, venturing out of its home at times to hunt down small monsters that it preys on and attacking anything that ventures into its territory. Lala Barina also displays a sort of calculative behaviour, always assessing its situations before attacking.
Habitat[]
Lala Barina is native to the Scarlet Forest, where its nest is indicated by huge patches of area covered in red silk. The water near said nests is also stained red from its webs and may contain small silk florets that break off from the original web. Lala Barina has been known to wander into the Ruins of Wyveria to seek out food, mostly in the form of Porkeplume or Guardian Seikret.
Trivia[]
- When in a near-death state, Lala Barina will always return to its nest where it can be found sleeping upside down. This grants an opportunity for hunters to ambush it with powerful attacks or plant barrel bombs.
- The name Lala Barina is a direct transliteration from the Japanese name, ラバラ・バリナ (Rabara Barina), which likely derives from laba-laba, Indonesian for "spider", bara (kanji: 薔薇 / kana: バラ), Japanese for "rose", and Spanish La bailarina ("The (she) dancer").
- Lala Barina has a turf war with Doshaguma, resulting in a draw as it paralyses Doshaguma but receives heavy damage.
- With the introduction of Nerscylla’s hatchlings in Monster Hunter Wilds, Lala Barina is the only Temnoceran whose juvenile form cannot be fought.
