Queen Lilith Morningstar is a minor character in the adult animated musical dark comedy series Hazbin Hotel.
She is the estranged wife of Lucifer Morningstar and the mother of Charlie Morningstar, who played a hand in the creation of Hell, which she reigned as Queen before her disappearance.
She was also the first human woman ever created by the Angels and was cast into Hell along with Lucifer as punishment for accidentally corrupting humanity. Together, the two ruled Hell with Charlie until seven years prior to the events of the show, as revealed in the episode Overture. She has been absent ever since, not even responding to her family's calls.
It is later revealed that Lilith is currently residing in Heaven for unknown reasons, but following Adam's death, Lute threatened to kick her out unless she stops Charlie's plans. But, afterwards Lute would let her off the hook after Sera ordered her to call off any of her plans, therefore allowing her to stay in Heaven.
After the defeat of Vox and the concept of redemption being proven, Lilith finally calls Charlie back after being told the new progress of the Hotel.
Why Isn't She Heroic Nor Villainous?
- She does not have not enough screen-time yet, as there isn't a confirmation of why she left Lucifer and Charlie, and not too much is known on her to be able to be labeled good or bad (as of now) to be deemed heroic nor villainous yet.
- She is mostly characterized by the people in her life.
- She has yet to make a full appearance.
- While she is presented as heroic in the flashbacks like her husband and daughter, her possible abandonment of them contradicts this, while also not necessarily making her Villainous since we don't know the reason she left.
Appearance
Lilith is a tall and slender humanoid goat-themed demoness with a voluptuous hourglass figure and very pale pinkish-white skin. Her height is noticeable as it exceeds both of husband and daughter's (although it appears Charlie has inherited her height from her), standing over 6-and-a-half feet tall (6’6).Her eyes appear to have light violet irises, pale yellow sclera, slit pupils, and long thick eyelashes. Like her daughter she has very long ankle-length blonde hair is with thick honey-colored streaks, and it perpetually flows in the air, even when she isn't moving. She is seen with a pair of large and long, magenta curled horns, which noticeably differ depending on the scenario, due to her having the ability to change the shape of her horns at will. She is seen wearing makeup which consists of sparkling purple-plum eyeshadow and dark magenta lipstick.
In a family portrait, Lilith is seen dressed in an extravagant golden tiara adorned with small red jewels, a white pearl choker-necklace around her neck, a long sparkling purple dress with a sweetheart neckline, and a set of darker-colored opera gloves which covers most of her hands and arms.
In Heaven, Lilith's nails are polished black, and she wears a large dark purple sun hat with a purple-plum-colored band that covers her eyes, a necklace with a diamond-shaped ruby pendant, a long backless, sleeveless slit dress with a sweetheart neckline that is same color as her hat that reaches to her feet, and heeled black sandals with black vine-like straps. She also accessorizes with a pair of dark purple sunglasses with magenta lenses.
Pilot
In the pilot, Lilith's appearance was nearly identical, only her eyes have white irises and pinkish-lilac sclera, and she is seen wearing a black, thorn-like tiara instead.
Personality
While little is known about Lilith's personality, the "Story of Hell" book suggests that she is rebellious toward authoritarianism, as shown when she rejected Adam's control and degradation. Despite being sent to Hell and becoming a demon as punishment, she thrived as its queen and empowered her people. In addition, she was loving, as she deeply fell in love with Lucifer Morningstar together they had a daughter named Charlie. Lilith was depicted as being a devoted mother to Charlie, deeply connected to her family, and she passed her dreams for Hell to her daughter.
However, the revelation that Lilith had been staying in Heaven the previous seven years has put her personality and true feelings towards her family and Hell itself into question, as she apparently made a deal with Adam to stay there, seemingly relaxing on her lonesome on a beach while also deliberately declining all calls from Lucifer and Charlie.
As stated by her daughter, Lilith was a natural-born leader, being able to remain calm and collected as everyone in Hell turned to her for leadership and guidance during times of crisis and not being as affected by the intense pressures of leadership as her daughter and husband are. Charlie noted that Lilith could be extremely single minded when she sets her mind to something, as she had the tendency of ignoring anything she deemed unimportant to achieving her goals when she is striving for something.
Because of her influence, sinners in Hell admired her and cherished the idea of rebelling against Heaven's exterminations but, as Charlie mentioned, despite this, she may have only had peaceful and pacifistic intentions, only wishing to empower them so they can protect themselves and she had no desire to wage war or antagonize Heaven in any hostile manners.
Abilities
- Immortality - Lilith has existed since the creation of the Earth, meaning she is at least thousands of years old and presumably unable to die of old age, and as demonic royalty she is presumably biologically immortal and only able to be killed by angelic weaponry.
- Vocal empowerment - As told in Overture Lilith empowered all of demon-kind with her voice and her songs, making Hell grow and thrive over the many years it had existed.
- Shapeshifting horns - Lilith can change the shape of her horns. In the she is shown having different shaped horns across the various portraits in the Hotel. She can also make so that she has no horns, as seen in one portrait in the Hotel, in a few portraits in Lucifer's home, and in a flashback in dead beat Dad.
- Flowing hair - In non-windy environments, her hair is seen flowing on its own through unknown means.
Skillset
- Musical talent - Lilith is capable of singing so well the songs she sings are described as having empowered demonkind.
Trivia
- While she is a neutral character now that will most likely change in Season 3 whenever she will get more focus in order to be able to properly debate if she is a hero or a villain.
- Her name translates to "screech owl", or "night bird/hag/spectre" in Hebrew text.
- It's unknown if she could be classified as a sinner demon like the other condemned humans. While Vox called her as such she has some striking differences with the common sinners:
- While she was originally a human, she never died and was transformed into a demon right after her fall. Additionally she is the only human to not be a descendant of Adam as she was made to be his equal.
- All Sinners are sterile and can't have children as they are already dead. That's not the case with Lilith though as she has a biological daughter.
- Sinners cannot leave the Pride Ring because they are physically bound there while Lilith is living in Heaven, though it's still possible that her deal with Adam allowed her to go to Heaven although unlikely since the opposite couldn't be done for Pentious even by high ranked Seraphim.
- Despite appearing to have abandoned her family, Vivziepop has said that she loves her family very much. It's currently unknown if she left for selfish or selfless reasons as she could have been threatened by Adam.
- According to Vivziepop, like her daughter she likes music (and her powers are seemingly music based) and she is a fan of pineapple on pizza.
- Lilith's disappearance is suspiciously close to Alastor's disappearance. Additionally, Alastor's former master Rosie has statues of the Morningstar family in her garden showcasing a connection between the queen of Hell and the leader of Cannibal Town.
