Major Courage is a minor character in DuckTales (1987) serving as a major character in the episode "Where No Duck Has Gone Before". He is the hero of the Duckburg Studios show "Courage Of The Cosmos". He was Huey, Dewey, and Louie's idol until he left them to get killed by Overlord Bulovan.
While he is proclaimed a hero, this is only true in the Courage of the Cosmos fiction, in the in-universe real life he is just a coward that is incapable to do anything heroic and just wants to save his own skin.
Despite wanting to leave behind Launchpad, Huey, Dewey, Louie, and Doofus when they were attacked by Overlord Bulovan, he just does it to save himself and with no particular malicious intentions, so he is most of a simple jerk rather than a genuine villain.
Biography[]
Major Courage is the star of the popular television series Courage of the Cosmos, a science-fiction adventure show adored by Huey, Dewey, Louie, and Doofus Drake. Although the actor's real name is never revealed, his on-screen persona is known throughout the galaxy as a fearless space hero. When the young ducks finally meet him, they are thrilled to encounter their idol in person. However, Scrooge McDuck and Launchpad McQuack are far less impressed—both men know that the show's heroics are pure fiction and consider Major Courage to be an over-the-top performer rather than a genuine adventurer.
Deciding that the show could use some authenticity, Scrooge announces plans to completely overhaul Courage of the Cosmos to make it more realistic. Misinterpreting the situation, Major Courage becomes convinced that Scrooge intends to replace him with Launchpad as the show's new lead. In an effort to protect his role, he tries to win favor by flattering Scrooge's nephews and Doofus. When the renovations are completed, he invites the boys to join him for the first "new episode." Launchpad tags along as well—unaware that the ship being used is not a prop but an actual spacecraft.
Oblivious to the truth, Major Courage believes that everything unfolding is still part of the show, including the alien encounters. Even after the boys and Launchpad realize they have truly traveled into space, he stubbornly insists that it's all an elaborate production. His illusion shatters only when he battles the alien Overlord Bulvan and ends up covered in real slime. Horrified by the discovery that he is in genuine danger, Courage panics and flees, abandoning Launchpad and the boys to save himself.
Scrooge manages to contact him and orders him to return for the others, but Major Courage refuses, proving that his bravery exists only on television. The boys and Launchpad ultimately rescue themselves, while Scrooge delivers his verdict: he cancels Courage of the Cosmos and demotes its so-called hero to handing out souvenirs to children until his contract runs out.
Major Courage makes a brief cameo appearance in issue #6 of Joe Books' Darkwing Duck comic series, serving as a humorous nod to his fall from stardom.
