~ Marlena Gru |
Marlena Gru is a supporting character in the Despicable Me franchise. She was married to the supervillain Robert Gru and gave birth to her twin sons Gru and Dru, but they later got divorced, due to her husband's tradition of being a villain.
She is voiced by Julie Andrews.
Why isn't she heroic or villainous?[]
- She was neglectful of her own son Gru and didn’t acknowledge his accomplishments, therefore being the main reason why Gru resorted to steal the moon, so she doesn't count as a hero.
- Her worst actions of constantly neglecting Gru and subsequently turning him into the villain he is today amount to just being an average abusive parent, making her a jerk and not a villain.
Biography[]
Background[]
Shortly after her twin sons Dru and Felonious were born, Marlena divorced with her husband Robert, and the pair made an agreement regarding custody of the twins in case of either of their deaths.
Despicable Me[]
Gru phones her while driving to the Bank of Evil, telling her that he was planning something very big and that when she heard about it, she would be very proud, to which she cynically responded, "Well, good luck with that." Later, she visits Gru's house and shows Margo, Edith and Agnes several embarrassing pictures of Gru's childhood, much to his annoyance. At the end of the film, she attends the girls' ballet dance, where she finally told her son that she was proud of him and that he turned out to be a great parent just like herself, admitting that he might be even better. When the music changes to You Should Be Dancing, she, along with everyone else, rushes onstage to dance and ends up dancing together with Dr. Nefario.
Despicable Me 2[]
She attends the wedding of her son.
Minions[]
She and Gru attend Villain-Con and check out the Freeze Ray, Dr. Nefario's new invention. During the credits, it is revealed that she has a portrait that resembles Mona Lisa but it is later vandalized by Minions and her son, making her considerably upset.
Despicable Me 3[]
She practices diving with other young trainers named Vincenzo and Paolo in a fancy pool. When Gru comes to ask her about his twin brother Dru, she gets surprised and then admits that he does have an extended family, and she tells him the story, noting that she had "second pick", Gru.
Minions: The Rise of Gru[]
TBA
Despicable Me 4[]
She is seen during the party in Gru's backyard.
Personality[]
Marlena Gru was rather neglectful of her son Felonious Gru and had a tendency to be rather nasty to him. She ignored him in his childhood, though she did seem mildly impressed by the rocket he built. She was unimpressed by most of Gru's accomplishments, but eventually grew proud of him when he showed her what a great parent he was. She was also ignorant of her own lack of skill at parenting, thinking that she was a great parent, though she did admit that she thought Gru might be slightly better.
Despite her neglect towards her own son, Marlena took a liking to his adopted daughters and showed them pictures of Gru as a child because she wanted to. She also never had anyone to talk to for a while.
Being the exact opposite of of Robert Gru, she is not interested in villainy and therefore prefers Dru more than Felonious.
Trivia[]
- She used to have a page on the Heroes Wiki for a long time and was even approved as Pure Good at some point, however she was eventually removed due to no longer being considered a heroic character.
