In the year 847, his older brother Connie enlisted in the 104th Training Corps. Martin was seen holding his mother when he Connie departed, probably not wanting Connie to leave.
Clash of the Titans arc[]
Three years later, after the lack of progress the Marleyan Warriors have shown in their mission to capture the Founding Titan, as well as their ominous silence, the Marleyan Military decided to intervene and prepare new plans for a future invasion of the Walls of Paradis Island and help fasten up the progress. Wanting to make a small test-run of these plans, and possibly even discover if the four missing Warriors - Marcel Galliard, Reiner Braun, Bertolt Hoover, and Annie Leonhart - are still alive on the island, the Military decides to send out a small contingent of soldiers consisting of Zeke Yeager, Pieck Finger, and a few more comrades carrying a gas weapon that had already been previously used to defeat and conquer enemy nations. The soldiers, Zeke, and Pieck went up to the Eldian village of Ragako and placed several cannisters around the town, out of these objects would spill out large amounts of gas that swept throughout the village. This gas was Zeke’s spinal fluid turned into a gaseous form, after each inhabitant of Ragako inhaled it, including Martin Springer. Zeke let out a scream which acted as trigger for the transformation, Martin, and everyone else of Ragako were now turned into Pure Titans. This was merely a reconnaissance mission, meant as a trial to test the enemy's strength and to stage for a future real invasion of the Walls of larger scale by using Zeke's spinal fluid.
What exactly Martin would do after his transformation is unknown, but he would nonetheless mindlessly walk throughout Wall Rose. The chance however that he killed anyone is very slim, as the Survey Corps where successfully capable of alerting the nearby villages in time, except for a town that his Titanized father attack.
Martin Springer would eventually be killed by a Survey Corps soldier at some point during the cleanup of Wall Rose.
Connie would, after learning the truth of what happened to his family, mourn Martin, his sister and parents.
War for Paradis arc[]
The description of the Ragako destruction was clarified by Zeke to the Eldian military as soon as he landed to Paradis Island from Marley. One made-up part of the event is added by Zeke, stating that the villagers who had breathed in the gas weapon containing his spinal fluid had frozen up and went paralyzed, before he had screamed to transform them. This was added in order to evade any possible mistrust towards Yelena, who throughout the last two years effectively pushed the government to give imprisoned Marleyan soldiers freedom, rights, and jobs that gave them entrance to their enemies' food and drinks. Zeke was interrogated numerous times about it by Levi, to see if the story altered and to see if he would ever express any noticeable guilt or sorrow for the village's victims.
