Meg Thrombey is a major character in the 2019 mystery film Knives Out.
She is a friend to Marta Caberea up until she betrays her by telling the rest of the Thrombey's about Marta's mother's immigration status in an attempt to blackmail Marta into giving them Harlan's inheritance, though she does eventually regret her choice to betray her friend.
Biography[]
Meg is first seen scolding the police for referring to Marta as "the help", and leads her friend inside. Meg is the only one who is genuinely kind to Marta, as seen by many of her relatives not usually giving her any extra thought. However, upon the will reading of Harlan Thrombey, where it is revealed that he left everything to Marta, Meg realizes that without Harlan's money, she cannot continue going to her college.
She calls Marta and tries to convince her friend to give her the money, but Marta does not want to go against Harlan's wishes, but promises to support Meg's college costs herself.
Meg, not satisfied with the answer, reveals Marta's biggest secret to her family; that her mother is an undocumented immigrant. By doing so, she has given her family blackmail material against Marta, and Walt tries confronting the girl to use it against her. Meg soon becomes horrified with herself as she realizes what she has just done, and apologizes to Marta later in the movie. Marta forgives her, but the damage is still done.
At the end of the movie, Meg is among her family looking up at Marta, who is drinking from Harlan's 'My House' mug, demonstrating that Marta does not intend to help the Thrombey's after all they did to her. Whether or not she decided to truly forgive Meg, and still support her through college even after the girl's betrayal, is unknown.
