The Mizutsune are a species of monster that are from the science fantasy videogame, Monster Hunter Generations. They are a species of Leviathan that are unique for their ability to produce a slick, bubbly foam which they can use for locomotion and to fend off enemies. While usually docile and harmless to humans, male Mizutsune in heat can become territorial and aggressive, which is why the Hunters Guild sends hunters only after them specifically.

Physiology[]

Thanks to being harmless and not a priority for hunting, female and immature Mizutsune are never seen in-game, meaning all Mizutsune hunted are breeding males. Mizutsune's physique is long and lean, just like that of most other Leviathans. He is one of the few Leviathans, nonetheless, that has fur on his body. His legs, tail, and underside are all covered with this dark purple fur. He has light-colored scales that resemble fish scales. His head has several fin-like appendages that attractively embellish its lengthy snout. He has these fins on his back and tail; they are pink with yellow patterns. Mizutsune is supposed to be able to walk quickly on land thanks to his unique feet, which set him apart from other Leviathans.

When enraged, a Mizutsune's body will flush a hot red, with the pink patterns on their bodies turning scarlet. Conversely, when exhausted its body will take on a bluish tone.

It is reported that the females have duller coloring, shorter fins, and dark black hair.

Abilities[]

Capable and rather powerful predators, Mizutsune are incredibly strong, durable and resilient compared to other monsters, allowing them to dominate most ecosystems. Their sharp claws not only allow them to grip onto slippery rocks in their territories, but also slash at foes to dispatch them. They are also incredibly agile and graceful, being able to leap into the air with little effort and outmaneuver most enemies. Like most other water monsters, Mizutsune have a Hydro Sac which allows them to store up incredible amounts of water that they can shoot out in pressurised jets.

A Mizutsune's signature power is its bubble foam, which it secretes from the furry portions of its body. This soapy solution, when mixed with water, becomes incredibly slippery and allows the Mizutsune to slip and slide around gracefully, adding on to its already impressive agility. While hunters can also make use of this to dodge more effectively, getting too much on one's self will cause them to slide around uncontrollably. Furthermore, the Mizutsune can produce large bubbles from their mouths that can pop with impressive force, covering foes in more slippery solution that impedes movement.

The Mizutsunes of the Forbidden Lands possess some abilities that make them different from regular members of their species. Not only can their bubbles fuse to create even larger barriers, but when if their heads are broken they can suddenly impart fire abilities into their bubbles, with their left eyes bursting into blue flame. This causes these Mizutsunes to highly resemble their Deviants: Soulseer Mizutsune, who are blind and can manipulate fire thanks to a diet heavy in Burst Arowana. Thus, it seems that while Mizutsune can gain the latent ability to manipulate fire by eating Burst Arowana, their abilities may only be awakened if their eyesight is compromised.

Behavior[]

Normally, Mizutsune are known for being incredibly docile, with wild specimens being calm enough to be petted. This changes during mating season however, when male Mizutsune are filled with hormones that make them more aggressive in order to compete for partners. As such, they will become much more territorial and have been known to viciously savage trespassers. Despite this, they typically don’t like violence and will not pursue fleeing offenders, additionally only attacking in retaliation. However, certain males are known to go berserk when in heat, attacking anything they deem a threat.

In the wild, Mizutsune are piscivorous, preying on fish with their curved teeth and occasionally hunting down larger herbivores. While peaceable they will defend themselves against aggressor monsters such as Zinogre or Rathalos, fending them off from their territory.

Habitat[]

Mizutsune mostly live in areas with shallow rivers that give them access to the fish they eat, such as the Misty Peaks and Flooded Forest. They have also been found living near the lakes of the Scarlet Forest, swimming there and snacking on fish.

Trivia[]

  • While never seen in-game, external sources such as art books confirm that female Mizutsune appear similar to males but with smaller fins and drabber colourations.
  • Mizutsune was voted as the 14th most popular monster in the 20th anniversary Hunters’ Choice poll, making it the second most popular Leviathan species.
