The Monsters are the main antagonistic faction of Monster Hunter franchise. They are numerous species of large bodied animal that inhabit the series' world, often imbued with supernatural powers. As many of them can occasionally pose a threat to civilians or possess materials important to the welfare of people, the Hunters Guild sends hunters, such as the games' main protagonist, to hunt these monsters down.

Why aren't they heroic or villainous?[]

  • In Monster Hunter, the "monsters" are not considered heroes or villains because they are primarily depicted as wild creatures acting instinctively within their natural environment, not actively seeking to harm humans, and the hunting is often presented as a necessary part of maintaining ecological balance, with hunters only taking action when a monster poses a direct threat to human settlements or becomes overpopulated. This excludes a very few of them which are considered villains.
    • While the Elder Dragons are stated to have somewhat rudimentary sapience, they aren't considered villains as many of them cause disasters unintentionally and are for the most part regular animals trying to survive.
    • The Lynians are exempt from this rule however, as they are confirmed to be as intelligent as humans and as such, are either heroic or villainous depending on their actions, though some may be considered as neutral for their lack of malice or good.
    • The Constructs are somewhat unclear in terms of sapience thanks to being artificial life forms created to serve humans, unlike th other natural monsters. Thus, they may possess enough sapience to obey orders, though whether this trait still remains with them after so many years.

Biography[]

The majority of the games are action role-playing games. As part of quests assigned to them by locals, the player assumes the role of a hunter who must kill or capture large monsters across a variety of landscapes. Some quests call for the gathering of a specific item or items, which may expose the hunter to danger from various monsters. In order to create better weapons, armor, and other items that will help them take on more challenging monsters, players must complete quests and collect loot from those activities. All games in the main series support single-player play as well as multiplayer (typically for up to four players cooperatively).

Monster Types[]

As a result of the vast array of creatures that inhabit the franchise's world, the Hunters Guild has come up with several groups that are meant to categorise the monsters of the known world phylogenetically. Keep in mind that some creatures may be classified into certain groups solely because of their traits and not because of their relations to other members of the group: e.g Kestodon and Gastodon are in the Herbivore group despite being small species of Brute Wyvern.

Note: This page only includes monster classes that are present in the mainline series. Classes introduced via crossovers or in non-mainline games will not be shown here.

Legend: The names of the primary monster species will be highlighted in bold, the names of monsters found solely outside the mainline series or in additional lore material will be underlined, while the names of crossover monsters will also be italicised. The names of upcoming monsters will also have an asterisk that will be removed once their game comes out.

Herbivore[]

A small group of monsters, the Herbivores are not necessarily related genetically, being grouped into this class thanks to their shared behavioural traits such as herbivory and herding. While most tend to be docile and harmless, some such as the Slagtoth and Gastodon will fight back if threatened.

The members of the Herbivore group are: Apceros, Aptonoth (with Aptonoth EX), Kelbi, Mosswine, Anteka, Popo, Epioth, Rhenoplos, Slagtoth, Larinoth, Moofah, Kestodon, Gastodon, Gowngoat, Burukku, Erupe, Dalthydon, Ceratonoth, and Rafma.

Neopteron[]

The Neopterons are a group of insect-like monsters that typically grow much smaller than other monsters, though much larger than regular insects. They generally live in swarms or small groups, though the Bnahabra and Ahtal-Ka are often sighted solo.

The members of the Neopteron group are: Vespoid and Vespoid Queen, Hornetaur, Great Thunderbug, Altaroth, Bnahabra (with Thanksalot Bnahabra), Konchu, Seltas and Seltas Queen (with Desert Seltas and Desert Seltas Queen), Ahtal-Ka, Lightenna (with Poikilos Lightenna), Great Dracophage Bug, Bulaqchi and Comaqchi.

Fish[]

As the class's name suggests, the Fish group is composed of fishes large enough to be classified as monsters. So far, its only member is the Gajau, and even it has occasionally been classified into the Piscine Wyverns class instead.

Temnoceran[]

The Temnocerans are a group of arachnid-like monsters, typically resembling spiders. They are all carnivorous and often reside in dark conditions, mostly living in caves.

The members of the Temnoceran group are: Nerscylla and Nerscylla hatchlings(with Shrouded Nerscylla), Rakna-Kadaki and Rachnoid (with Pyre Rakna-Kadaki and Pyrantula), and Lala Barina.

Wingdrake[]

The Wingdrakes are small, pterosaur-like monsters. They are typically primary predators in the ecosystem, consuming small animals such as insects and rodents before being consumed themselves.

The members of the Wingdrake group are: Barnos, Mernos, Noios, Raphinos, Cortos, Harpios and Baunos.

Bird Wyvern[]

The Bird Wyverns are a group of theropod monsters that in general, have a more lithe and lean body structure than their other wyvern relatives. The group is separated into two categories: Flying Bird Wyverns, which are capable of flight and resemble both Flying Wyverns and avians, and Theropod Bird Wyverns, which compose of Bird Wyverns resembling theropods. The latter group is also composed of three superfamilies: the New World Bird Wyverns, the Old World Bird Wyverns, and the Dog Wyverns. The former superfamily is solitary while the latter two live in packs, with the Dog Wyverns being distinguished from the Old World Bird Wyverns with their generally stockier frames as Alphas.

The members of the Bird Wyvern group are: Gendrome and Genprey, Iodrome and Ioprey, Velocidrome and Velociprey, Giadrome and Giaprey, Great Baggi and Baggi, Great Jaggi, Jaggi, and Jaggia, Great Wroggi and Wroggi, Great Maccao and Maccao, Kulu-Ya-Ku, Tzitzi-Ya-Ku, Great Izuchi and Izuchi, Boggi, Great Apypos and Apypos, Yian Kut-Ku (with Blue Yian Kut-Ku), Gypceros (with Purple Gypceros), Yian Garuga (with Scarred Yian Garuga, Deadeye Yian Garuga and One-Eared Yian Garuga), Hypnocatrice (with Silver Hypnocatrice, Breeding Season Hypnocatrice, Zenith Hypnocatrice and Gold Hypnocatrice), Qurupeco (with Crimson Qurupeco), Gargwa, Malfestio (with Nightcloak Malfestio), Pukei-Pukei (with Coral Pukei-Pukei), Aknosom, Farunokku, Forokururu, Toridcless (with Zenith Toridcless), Chramine (with Ice Chramine), Delma-Ioprey, Seikret, Talioth and Porkeplume.

Flying Wyvern[]

The most diverse group of monsters, the Flying Wyverns are a group of dinosaurian monsters that all share the anatomical trait of possessing wing bones, no matter how useless or degenerated they may be. They inhabit a vast array of habitats and are typically capable of flight, though some are weaker at doing so, use their wings for other purposes or have lost them altogether. The Flying Wyverns seem to be typically carnivorous and often occupy high spots in their respective food chains, though some are herbivorous such as the Diablos.

The members of the Flying Wyvern group are: Basarios (with Ruby Basarios, Crystal Basarios and Sandstone Basarios), Diablos (with Black Diablos, Bloodbath Diablos, Apex Diablos, Gilded Diablos and Steel Armor Diablos), Gravios (with Black Gravios and Zenith Gravios), Khezu (with Red Khezu and Zenith Khezu), Monoblos (with White Monoblos and Shattered Monoblos), Rathalos (with Azure Rathalos, Silver Rathalos, Dreadking Rathalos, Apex Rathalos, Zenith Rathalos, Destruction Wyvern Rathalos and Flame Rathalos), Rathian (with Pink Rathian, Gold Rathian, Dreadqueen Rathian, Apex Rathian, Conflagration Rathian and Scorching Heat Rathian), Seregios (with Demonic Seregios), Astalos (with Boltreaver Astalos), Bazelgeuse (with Seething Bazelgeuse), Legiana (with Shrieking Legiana), Paolumu (with Nightshade Paolumu), Espinas (with Flaming Espinas, Espinas Rare Species and Zenith Espinas), Berukyurosu, Doragyurosu (with Zenith Doragyurosu), Gurenzeburu, Halk, Anorupatisu (with Zenith Anorupatisu), Unknown/Black Flying Wyvern, Meraginasu, Zerureusu (with Sparkling Zerureusu), Varusaburosu, Gureadomosu, Egyurasu, Zenaserisu, Akantor, Tigrex (with Brute Tigrex, Molten Tigrex, Grimclaw Tigrex, Zenith Tigrex, Flame Tigrex, Unit-02 Tigrex, Sweet Tooth Tigrex and Tigrex EX), Nargacuga (with Green Nargacuga, Lucent Nargacuga, Silverwind Nargacuga, Blinking Nargacuga and Fiercewater Nargacuga), Ukanlos, Barioth (with Sand Barioth, Frostfang Barioth and Frozen Barioth), Gigginox and Giggi (with Baleful Gigginox, Virulent Gigginox and Yoga Gigginox), Pariapuria, Dyuragaua, Odibatorasu, Hyujikiki (with Zenith Hyujikiki), Mi Ru, Diorekkusu, Poborubarumu and Bogabadorumu, Rey Dau and Arkveld.

Piscine Wyvern[]

The Piscine Wyvern group consists of wyverns that have evolved similar appearances to fish. They are not limited to water but typically don't live on solid ground, making their adobes in non-solid mediums such as water, sand and lava. They also tend to be bipedal, though Delex seems to be the exception.

The members of the Piscine Wyvern group are: Cephalos and Cephadrome, Plesioth (with Green Plesioth, Zenith Plesioth, Seabream Plesioth and Whitewater Plesioth), Lavasioth (with Lavasioth Subspecies), Delex, Jyuratodus, Beotodus, Aruganosu and Goruganosu.

Carapaceon[]

The Carapaceon group consists mostly of crustacean-like monsters, most resembling crabs or their relatives. The Akura Vashimu and its variants differ however, resembling scorpions instead. All members of this group are terrestrial, though they may be found near bodies of water. They also appear to have blueish blood.

Fanged Beast[]

The Fanged Beasts are a diverse group of mammalian monsters that inhabit numerous habitats. They are organised into two families: Hard Teeth, consisting of primate-like Fanged Beasts, and Hard Claw, a family the rest of the group occupies. While most Fanged Beasts tend not to be remarkable in terms of power and are preyed on by many other monsters, some like Rajang and Gammoth are notoriously powerful and incredibly feared.

The members of the Fanged Beast group are: Blangonga and Blango (with Copper Blangonga, Zenith Blangonga and Flame Blangonga), Bulldrome and Bullfango (with Elemental Bulldrome), Congalala and Conga, (with Emerald Congalala and Gold Congalala), Rajang (with Furious Rajang and Enma Rajang), Kecha Wacha (with Ash Kecha Wacha), Gammoth (with Elderfrost Gammoth), Bishaten (with Blood Orange Bishaten), Garangolm, Gogomoa, Kamu Orugaron and Nono Orugaron, Midogaron (with Zenith Midogaron), Lolo Gougarf and Ray Gougarf, Voljang, Caeserber (with Yellow Caeserber and Ghost Caeserber), Slicemargl (with Purple Slicemargl), Naco Agul, Arzuros (with Redhelm Arzuros and Apex Arzuros), Kumashira, Lagombi (with Snowbaron Lagombi and Witch Lagombi), Volvidon (with Black Star Beast Volvidon and Christmas Volvidon), Canynes, Bombadgy, Goss Harag, Doshaguma and Ajarakan.

Leviathan[]

As the group's name suggests, Leviathans are monsters that all live in or near non-solid mediums such as water, mud or even lava. They are quadrupedal to distinguish them from Piscine Wyverns and typically can swim very well, though this is not the case for species such as Mizutsune. A majority of them have reptilian or piscine traits, though Pokara and Pokaradon mainly exhibit mammalian ones.

The members of the Leviathan group are: Agnaktor and Uroktor (with Glacial Agnaktor, Purgatory Agnaktor, Agnaktor EX, and Uroktor EX), Gobul (with Witch Gobul), Lagiacrus (with Ivory Lagiacrus, Abyssal Lagiacrus, and Landconquest Lagiacrus), Royal Ludroth and Ludroth (with Purple Ludroth), Nibelsnarf, Mizutsune (with Violet Mizutsune, Soulseer Mizutsune, Apex Mizutsune and Thunderbubble Mizutsune), Almudron (with Magma Almudron), Somnacanth (with Aurora Somnacanth), Kuarusepusu, Pokara and Pokaradon, Baruragaru (with Zenith Baruragaru), Gajios, Piragill, Uth Duna, Balahara, Hirabami and Jin Dahaad.

Snake Wyvern[]

The Snake Wyverns are wyverns that have very elongated, snake-like bodies, as well as fangs. The group is rather small, initially only containing Najarala before the Remobra was re-classified into this group.

The members of the Snake Wyvern group are: Remobra and Najarala (with Tidal Najarala).

Brute Wyvern[]

The Brute Wyverns are a group of wyverns that possess a body plan akin to theropod dinosaurs. They often have under-developed arms, powerful legs and long tails for counterbalance and other uses. They tend to be rather aggressive and are more often than not carnivorous, though some are herbivorous and even feed on ore.

The members of the Brute Wyvern group are: Barroth (with Jade Barroth, Thanksalot Barroth and Barroth EX), Deviljho (with Savage Deviljho, Four Heavenly King Deviljho, Starving Deviljho and Aberrant Deviljho), Uragaan (with Steel Uragaan, Crystalbeard Uragaan, B.O.W. Fanged Wyvern[]

The Fanged Wyverns are a group of quadrupedal wyverns that are nearly entirely terrestrial. They are often powerfully built and are capable predators. The Fanged Wyverns vary greatly in appearance: species originating from the Old World tend to have more mammalian builds with snouts and fur, while species from the New World are comparatively more reptilian. The New World Wyverns are also known as the Thief Wyverns for their mobbing behaviour and predatory natures, though the solitary and lithovorous Dodogama is exempt from this behaviour.

The members of the Fanged Wyvern group are: Zinogre (with Stygian Zinogre, Thunderlord Zinogre, Apex Zinogre, Howling Zinogre, FFBE Zinogre and Immortal Zinogre), Dodogama, Great Girros and Girros, Great Jagras and Jagras, Odogaron (with Ebony Odogaron), Shamos, Tobi-Kadachi (with Viper Tobi-Kadachi), Wulg, Magnamalo (with Scorned Magnamalo) and Lunagaron.

Cephalopods[]

A class of monster introduced in Monster Hunter Wilds, the Cephalopods are a class of colossal molluscs that possess eight flexible appendages and are completely boneless, allowing them to effortlessly slip and squeeze through their surroundings. Like real life cephalopods they appear to bleed blue blood and have brains in their tentacles, as evidenced by Nu Udra's severed arms wriggling about. Not much is known about them currently thanks to their extremely new presence but interestingly, all of them seem blind currently. Additionally, their young are all small and harmless, leading to their classification as Endemic Life instead.

Currently, the only confirmed members of the Cephalopod group are Nu Udra and Xu Wu.

Elder Dragon[]

The Elder Dragons are a group of enigmatic and powerful monsters, possessing powers unexplainable by conventional science and so vast they're often considered living natural disasters. Their sheer scarcity and elusive natures make their ecological niches unclear, but for the most part they appear to be apex predators or powerful wanderers that overtake any ecosystem they fancy. Most Elder Dragons also appear to be extremely long-lived: Fatalis has kept Castle Schrade as its domain for centuries, Crimson Glow Valstrax reduced the Sandy Plains to a barren wasteland centuries ago, while Primordial Malzeno is still in its physical prime despite fighting Gaismagorm centuries ago. While many of the Elder Dragons appear related, possessing a hexapodal body form and some reptilian traits, others, such as the Nakarkos and Yama Tsukami, are classified into the group only because they don't appear related to any other monster group.

The Elder Dragon class as a whole have numerous traits that are unique as they apply to all of them: they are immune to sleep and paralysis inducing toxins, will often repel almost every small monster from the area with their very presence, can have their elemental abilities weakened by breaking any horns present on their heads, and can be repelled instead of being killed, allowing the same individual to be fought numerous times. Additionally, external sources such as art books imply that the group as a whole possess intelligence comparable to humans, making it possible that they have moral agency. In Monster Hunter World, the Third Fleet Commander radically theorises that Elder Dragons might not even exist, instead being terrible, eldritch entities so unfathomable the mortal mind can only process them as dragons. While this theory was merely suggested as a far-fetched explanation for the powers of the Elder Dragons, this could explain their physics-defying powers and supernatural might, incomparable to any regular living beings.

The members of the Elder Dragon group are: Fatalis (with Crimson Fatalis and White Fatalis), Kirin (with Oroshi Kirin and Thunder Emperor Kirin), Lao-Shan Lung (with Ashen Lao-Shan Lung), Chameleos (with Risen Chameleos), Kushala Daora (with Rusted Kushala Daora and Risen Kushala Daora), Lunastra and Teostra (with Risen Teostra), Yama Tsukami, Alatreon, Ceadeus (with Goldbeard Ceadeus), Jhen Mohran (with Hallowed Jhen Mohran), Amatsu, Dire Miralis, Dah'ren Mohran, Dalamadur (with Shah Dalamadur), Shagaru Magala (with Risen Shagaru Magala), Gogmazios, Nakarkos, Valstrax (with Crimson Glow Valstrax and Risen Crimson Glow Valstrax), Kulve Taroth, Nergigante (with Ruiner Nergigante), Vaal Hazak (with Blackveil Vaal Hazak), Xeno'jiiva and Safi'jiiva, Zorah Magdaros, Namielle, Shara Ishvalda, Velkhana, Behemoth, Thunder Serpent Narwa (with Narwa the Allmother), Wind Serpent Ibushi, Malzeno (with Primordial Malzeno), Gaismagorm, Rukodiora (with Zenith Rukodiora), Rebidiora, Disufiroa, Shantien, Duremudira (with Arrogant Duremudira), Garuba Daora, Guanzorumu (with Ruler Guanzorumu), Harudomerugu (with Zenith Harudomerugu), Inagami (with Zenith Inagami), Toa Tesukatora, Yama Kurai, Eruzerion (with Burning Freezing Eruzerion), Keoaruboru, Merphistophelin (with Elemental Merphistophelin), Tartaronis (with Infernal Tartaronis), Eo Garudia, Morudomunto, Nef-Garmat, Versa Pietru (with Makili Pietru), Oltura, and Myo Galuna.

Demi-Elders[]

The Demi-Elders are a class of monster introduced in Monster Hunter Wilds. As the name of this class suggests, the monsters here are closely related to Elder Dragons, with some even being the younger forms of said Elders. However, the members of this class lack certain attributes that Elder Dragons possess, hence their classification here to highlight to hunters their lesser powers.

The only member of the Demi-Elder group currently is Gore Magala (with Chaotic Gore Magala and Tenth Angel Gore Magala).

Lynians[]

The Lynians are a family of bipedal, humanoid creatures that, uniquely among monsters, are confirmed to be completely sapient, forming complex societal structures and hierarchies. The Lynians come in two forms: those resembling bipedal felines and those resembling primates. The feline Lynians are relatively more intelligent, being capable of speaking the human language and even offering their services to humans. In fact, many Felynes have integrated themselves into human society, working as hunters' assistants known as Palico.

The members of the Lynian family are: Felynes (with Melynx), Grimalkynes, Shakalaka with King Shakalaka, Gajalaka, Uruki, Gororu and Metaru, and Wudwud.

WARNING: Spoilers ahead for Monster Hunter Wilds[]

Constructs[]

While classified as monsters, the constructs aren't actually biological at all, being artificial beings modelled after normal monsters by the ancient people of Wyveria to protect a special relic of theirs. They do not require rest, food, or water, only relying on a bioenergy-rich substance known as Wyvern's Milk to sustain themselves, and are typically found hibernating in special pods. Their colour schemes are all various shades of white, black, grey and blue, while all of their eyes are eerily black pits. Furthermore, crystalline bioenergy often ends up forming on their bodies or they surfaces they touch when they attack, creating devastating explosions. When slain their bodies don't decompose like other monsters, instead crystallising into a cloudy white crystal.

The members of the constructs are: Guardian Arkveld, Guardian Doshaguma, Guardian Ebony Odogaron, Guardian Fulgur Anjanath, Guardian Rathalos, Guardian Seikret and Zoh Shia.
