This title is mine, Mac! You ain't never gonna take it.
~ Mr. Sandman to Little Mac
Tell your FACE to leave my fists alone.
~ Mr. Sandman

Mr. Sandman is a the main antagonist of the Punch-Out!! series. He appears in most of the games, as the final opponent in the arcade release, the Champion of the Major Circut in Super Punch-Out!!, and in the Wii version, the Champion of the World Circuit, in which he is the last opponent of the game, if not counting Donkey Kong. He is Little Mac's arch-rival.

He is voiced by Charles Martinet in the SNES version. In the Wii version however, he is voiced by Riley Inge, who also voices Doc Louis in the same game.

Why isn't He Heroic or Villainous[]

Due to one of the discussion posts in the Villains Wiki, he was never villainous, despite beating up those who were beaten by Little Mac.

Biography[]

Mr. Sandman appears as an opponent in the NES, SNES, and Wii installments of Punch-Out!!. In the former and latter, he is the champion of the World Circuit, in which he is the last opponent to beat in the game, if not counting Donkey Kong. In the SNES version however he is low ranked. He is a much more fleshed out character in the Wii version, as he is given more dialogue.

In his Contender cutscene, he is shown to have beaten all of the other opponents in the game just like how Mac did before facing him. The two then face off in the World Circuit, but Mr. Sandman ends up losing, making him angry, as shown in his Title Defense cutscene where he notices a poster with Little Mac's face on it, so he destroys an entire building as a response.

In his intermission, he becomes even more angry at Mac for having taken his title away from him, in which he says "You gotta be kidding me", and growls once Mac enters the ring. However, he still ends up losing, making Little Mac uphold his title as Champion, but if the latter loses to him in either TD or Mac's Last Stand, then Mr. Sandman will get the title back and become Champion again. However, this is entirely up to the player.

Personality[]

Not much is known about Mr. Sandman other than that in the Wii version, is shown to be very aggressive, in which in boxing, boxers should not be allowed to compete until their mental state improves, and due to the fact that he had destroyed an entire building in his Title Defense cutscene, he would have his license revoked. Despite this, Mr. Sandman seems to be one of the only few who actually abide by the rules, unlike the other boxers who resort to cheating and dirty tricks. The only ones being him taunting Little Mac when knocking him down, and not letting the ref raise his hand to declare him as the winner, though this is only half an infraction as Mr. Sandman might not have felt it.

Abilities[]

  • Dreamland Express - Mr. Sandman's signature move is the Dreamland Express, in which he will try hitting Mac using three fast uppercuts that require a quick reaction in order to dodge. Getting hit will result in a quarter of Mac's health being taken away.

Trivia[]

  • Mr. Sandman's name is based on the mythical character Sandman, who puts children to sleep using his sand. During his fights, Mr. Sandman makes multiple references to this, particularly his signature move the Dreamland Express, and when he is attacked while stunned, Z's will fly out of him.
  • He is one of the only few boxers in Punch-Out!! to not actively cheat as stated above.
