The Namielle are an Elder Dragon species that appears in the fantasy videogame, Monster Hunter World: Iceborne. They are mysterious dragons that rule over the Coral Highlands, being capable of producing not just electricity, but a mysterious water-like gel that washes away all in their path. As they are a relatively new species, the Hunters Guild has sent hunters to study and fight them, hoping to learn more about their anomalous abilities.
Why aren’t they heroic or villainous?[]
- They are quite docile, but become hostile when the hunters attack them first.
Physiology[]
Namielle is an Elder Dragon that takes inspiration from various types of marine life. It has a wide, arrow-shaped head covered in a chitinous shell, four thin barbels attached to its chin, beady eyes and sharp elongated teeth. It is mainly blue, with red details on its spines and crests, as well as a white underbelly. Its claws are webbed and are black. Namielle's most noticeable feature is its pair of huge wings resembling a manta ray's fins, being pitch black on the outside and blue on the inside. The membranes of these wings also connect to its tail, which is relatively small. Namielle possesses small bioluminescent strips similar to those of comb jellies on its body, possessing several on its wings, neck and two running along both sides of its belly.
When fully charged with elecricity and hydrated, Namielle's hide begins to glow blue. Its lower wings also become covered in a deep blue substance with white ripple patterns over it. Furthermore, it gains an aura of blue lightning. Conversely, when dehydrated Namielle's colours become more drab and gains tan tones.
Abilities[]
Namielle possesses a keen control over water, which it can summon in tremendous torrents from seemingly nowhere. It seems that this water is actually a mucus formed from Namielle dissolving its bodily fluids in pure water, allowing it to stay on land without evaporating and maintain a current which Namielle can use to move foes about. Namielle can also spit this mucus at high velocities as a jet of water, additionally using this mucus to make itself more agile. This ability has a catch though: Namielle will dry out if it expends too much of its water, though making contact with moisture will instantly rejuvenate it. When hydrated, Namielle also shows a great resistance to physical attacks though it will take more elemental damage.
Namielle also possesses the ability to release a powerful electric discharge from its body. Though normally limited in range to just its body, Namielle can utilise its conductive mucus to electrify its surroundings, resulting in devastating long-ranged attacks. When cornered Namielle can utilise both powers in tandem, releasing both its mucus and electricity in a huge burst that sprays electrified steam everywhere, creating destructive explosions as well. Namielle charging up is indicated by it unleashing a surge of electricity.
Like other Elder Dragons, Namielle's physical attributes are almost supernatural, to the point that its mere presence scares off almost every small monster in the vicinity, additionally being able to fend off monsters such as Savage Deviljho. It also seems remarkably intelligent, using its large, cape-like wings to manipulate the hunter's position to either unleash brutal close-ranged attacks or sweep them away. Namielle's method of flight is rather curious: it has almost never been seen flapping its wings, instead merely gliding from place to place.
Behavior[]
Namielle is a creature that merely appears to be docile and will defend herself when disturbed. In the face of danger, even it will first just attempt to fend off its assailant until it is forced to engage in a full-fledged defense, starting out using its water attacks to repel foes before using its electricity when cornered. While it is an apex predator, what Namielle eats is unknown, though its teeth resemble those of piscivores, indicating that it eats fish or Piscine Wyverns.
Habitat[]
In the Coral Highlands, Namielle is the top predator for Elder Dragons and has only been observed in the New World. It is a creature that inhabits the Guiding Lands, much like many others on the continent. Interestingly, it apparently favours the drier mountaintops of the Coral Highlands despite its aquatic appearance, only descending to the lower layers to refill its water.
Trivia[]
- Namielle ranked 18th in the 20th Anniversary Hunter's Choice poll for Top Monster.
- Namielle's puddles can be dried up by throwing Brightmoss at them.
- Namielle has turf wars against Savage Deviljho and Rajang.
- Unlike other Elder Dragons which can only achieve one state at a time, Namielle can apply the Charged and Hydrated state to itself both at the same time, though it loses them both after performing its ultimate attack
- Interestingly, Namielle always starts quests in its Hydrated state and while both states can be removed via Elderseal, only its Hydrated State can be removed by toppling it.
- As revealed by the latest Monster Hunter phylogeny tree, Namielle's closest relative is Chameleos, fitting as both monsters can produce electrical currents in their skin and have a degree of control over water, Namielle with its water mucus and Chameleos with its mist.
