The Nergigante are an Elder Dragon species that appears in the science fantasy videogame, Monster Hunter: World where it appeared as one of the two secondary antagonists (alongside Zorah Magdaros). They are colossal, muscular dragons that feed on other Elder Dragons, keeping the ecosystem in check by ensuring populations of these powerful beasts are kept to sustainable levels. The individual first seen in game plans to attack and consume the dying Zorah Magdaros, an act the Hunters’ Guild and the Hunter try to stop it from doing so as to prevent the dying Elder Dragon’s bio-energy from contaminating and destroying the nearby ecosystems prematurely.

Physiology[]

Nergigante is a bristly, colossal dragon that has four limbs and two wings, typically assuming a bipedal stance. It is covered with spikes that break off and grow back on it regularly. It has two enormous, bull-like horns composed seemingly of fused spikes. The monster's hide is mostly black with highlights of purple and orange. Nergigante also possesses developed hands with opposable thumbs. On some bodily areas, it will gradually produce white spikes that get harder with time. Before the white spikes solidify, hunters must attempt to break through them. When they harden, the harm from its strikes increases. When these spikes come back, they are white, but if they are allowed to solidify, they will turn black. These spikes will deflect assaults and do greater damage to enemies once they have hardened.

It is possible to break Nergigante's horns, front limbs, wings, and tail. Moreover, its tail can be cut off. Rewards for breaking Nergigante's spikes are not part break related. Only shattering the horns will yield a prize. However, breaking Nergigante's spikes will make breaking components simpler.

Behavior[]

Nergigante are notorious for being powerful and vicious predators that specially target Elder Dragons for their high concentrations of bioenergy, which they find especially delicious. They are known to follow migrations of weak or dying Elder Dragons to the New World during Elder Crossings, hoping to snag easy prey. As such, it is speculated that Nergigante as a species are solely responsible for keeping these powerful and dangerous monsters from sending the ecosystem into disarray. Despite their penchant for eating Elder Dragons, Nergigante have no problem with consuming normal monsters purely for nutrition.

Nergigante are known for being incredibly belligerent and aggressive, using their powerful and muscular builds to overpower and grapple their prey before pummelling them into submission. They are known to fight without any heed to their own safety, even causing injury to themselves at times, and only grow more vicious as they're backed into a corner. This behaviour, while unusual, actually suits the Nergigante's abilities as its spikes grow back stronger every time they're broken, meaning that Nergigante becomes more powerful as it battles, allowing it to outlast its prey. Nergigante is also seen breaking smaller spikes from its hide while resting, displaying that it takes care to groom itself and ensure its defenses are strong enough for its next victim.

Abilities[]

Despite having no special elemental abilities, Nergigantes possess something completely unique to them: a set of infinitely regenerating spikes on their hides. These spikes are exceptionally durable and pointy, granting the Nergigante unparalleled offense and defense. Nergigante can eject these spikes at will for ranged attacks and are capable of growing them back in mere seconds. These spikes are much more durable when developed but require time to harden, making them tender points on the Nergigante's body.

In addition to their unusual spikes, Nergigante possess incredible strength and durability commonplace among their Elder Dragon kin, though Nergigante's strength is even more impressive compared to its peers. It has been seen pummeling similarly sized Elder Dragons such as Kushala Daora into submission, and shrugging off a volley of ballista shots. Nergigante also has an incredible healing factor, being able to completely regenerate from a longsword slash in mere seconds during a cutscene. However, seeing as it only regenerates its spikes during its actual fight, it's likely that when stressed or in combat, Nergigante is unable to regenerate at full capacity or requires energy reserves that it cannot currently tap on.

Breeding asexually, Nergigante has no biological sex. When compared to other species, it has an unusual method of reproducing, yet it still requires a lot of bioenergy. In order to create another of its type without the aid of a partner, Nergigante may utilize some of the bioenergy it has expended during spike regeneration to start producing germ cells inside as it reproduces with its spikes. Due to its increased need for bioenergy to generate the next generation, Nergigante was probably chasing Zorah Magdaros during the most recent Elder Crossing in order to discover a food source of extraordinary strength. It's interesting to note that the children and their parent have the same DNA, showing that Nergigante likely clones itself using its spines.

Interestingly, it’s been noted that Elder Dragons fighting Nergigante tend not to use their elemental abilities despite it being effective to do so, and have been seen facing difficulty when using their powers. Additionally, Nergigante’s gear grants the Elderseal effect despite it having no elemental abilities. This implies that Nergigante may be able to exert a primitive Elderseal aura that allows it to subdue prey more easily.

Habitat[]

The Elder's Recess, Everstream, Great Ravine, and Wildspire Waste are all home to Nergigante. However, it appears that they don't have a fixed territory, instead following their primary prey, Elder Dragons, where ever they go. They are commonly sighted in the New World thanks to the Elder Crossing allowing for great influxes of weaker prey, but are also rarely found in the Old World.

Trivia[]

  • Nergigante was voted as the 2nd most popular monster in the 20th Anniversary Hunters' Choice Poll for top monster, making it the most popular Elder Dragon.
