Nola Rice is the deuteragonist of the 2005 psychological thriller film Match Point. She is a struggling actress, the temporary husband of Tom Hewett and love interest of Chris Wilton.
She was portrayed by Scarlett Johansson.
Biography[]
Originally from Boulder, Colorado, Nola had an overall difficult and unfortunate life. She had a father who left her family and never sent them money; an alcoholic mother who couldn't hold down a job; and a sister, Linda, who according to Nola was beautiful, went to college for a few years and was addicted to drugs. Nola was an aspiring to be actress but struggled, appearing only in a commercial and always performing poorly in auditions due to losing confidence. She also had an unsuccessful marriage earlier in life that ended with her first abortion.
At some point in adulthood, Nola moved to London, England. She met a wealthy man named Tom Hewett at a party, who fell in love her at first sight, and they started a relationship. Nola got along with the rest of Tom's upper-class family except his mother Eleanor, who thought of Nola as overly emotional and deluded and wanted Tom to marry another woman. Nola met Chris when he befriended Tom and his family. As Nola was winning matches of table tennis with guests, Chris, a tennis instructor and former professional player, easily beat Nola in a match. The two quickly became attracted to each other and grew closer as Chris was accepted into the family through marrying Tom's sister Chloe.
One day, on her way to an audition, Nola ran into Chris, who offered to walk along with her for moral support. After she failed the audition, Nola and Chris went to a bar for her to relieve herself. Nola told Chris of her background and, as they conversed about their relationships, tried to persuade Chris not to make a pass at her as he was already with Chloe. Over the weekend, Chris and Nola visited the Hewett family estate in the countryside. That afternoon, Eleanor questioned Nola's choice to continue pursuing an acting career, upsetting her. Nola left the house in the midst of a thunderstorm to be alone, when Chris saw her wandering outside in the rain and followed her. He confessed his feelings for her, before they kissed and had sex in a wheat field. Nola regretted the encounter and wanted to move on, but Chris wanted to continue a relationship with her outside of marriage. Soon, Chris and Chloe married and Tom broke up with Nola at his family's urging.
Upset by the course of events, Nola moved to America to find a job, but then returned to London and lived alone in an apartment. She met Chris again at the Tate Modern, after which they began a full-blown affair, leading to Nola becoming pregnant. Chris asked her to get an abortion, but Nola refused as she had already done two abortions before (the second one with Tom) and wanted to raise the child with Chris. She began insisting Chris to leave Chloe for her, pointing out that he didn't truly love Chloe. Chris only kept delaying his promise to tell Chloe about the affair and lying to Nola, telling her over the phone that he was on vacation. However, Nola spotted Chris while shopping and later caught him red-handed, furiously yelling at him for lying. From that point on, they were often arguing, with Nola threatening to tell Chloe the truth if Chris didn't.
Chris ultimately chose Chloe over Nola and planned to kill Nola as a last resort. While at a clothing store where she was a cashier, Nola got a call from Chris, who told her to come home after work and that he had taken care of the problem. Nola canceled her appointment with an agent and later returned to her apartment. As she headed for her room, she was shot and killed by Chris, who had also killed her neighbor Betty Eastby in order to fake a burglary. During the investigation of the murders, the police believed the crime was likely committed by a drug addict stealing money and also found that Nola had kept a diary in which she wrote about her affair with Chris, which Detective Mike Banner showed Chris when questioning him. Later in the night, Chris was confronted by the spirits of Nola and Mrs. Eastby. Nola told Chris to prepare to pay the price for his actions. However, despite Banner's suspicions Chris was never caught as the police concluded that a certain homeless drug addict was responsible.
