The Plesioth are a species that are from the science fantasy videogame, Monster Hunter. They are a humongous species of Piscine Wyvern that stalk aquatic habitats, attacking anything they deem as food. Thus, they're often deemed as threats to neighbouring settlements and will be hunted if they come too close for comfort.

Physiology[]

The bodies of the bipedal creatures known as Plesioth resemble those of wyverns. They are coated with shimmering, fish-like scales, and they have paddle-like tails and webbed feet. Their eyes shine a dazzling yellow, and their mouth is full of shark-like fangs. Large fins on their head and back may be folded in and out as needed.

Abilities[]

As large, muscular Piscine Wyverns, Plesioth are incredibly at home in the water, capable of tremendous bursts of speed which they use to breach the water and ambush prey. While more clumsy on land, they are still capable of incredible feats of strength, sending hunters flying with a single hip check and using their immense masses to crush and pound foes. This size also grants the Plesioth incredible durability as only powerful apexes like Lagiacrus and Tigrex pose any threat to it. While resembling a fish, Plesioth is still a reptile and requires air, though it can stay submerged for incredibly long lengths of time.

Like most water monsters, Plesioth possesses an aqua sac to store water from its surroundings, which it can pump out at high pressures to fire devastating beams. Its spines are also coated in a potent neurotoxin which knocks out foes quickly, allowing the Plesioth to dispatch them with ease while they sleep.

Behavior[]

An ambush predator of shallower waters, Plesioth are capable of hunting prey in and out of the water, remaining hidden until something ventures too close before striking. Their sheer size allows them to prey on a huge variety of animals such as small crocodilians, though for some reason they seem to really like frogs. As such, hunters often utilise this fondness to lure Plesioth into getting fished onto land where, thanks to their fairly slow wits, they will thrash about harmlessly for a few seconds before regaining their footing. Plesioth have very sensitive ears and can get stunned by loud noises.

Plesioth largely fear no predators thanks to their large sizes, only facing competition from more agile or land-based predators such as the Flying Wyverns and Tigrex, which can outmaneuver it on land. Plesioth also frequently feuds with Lagiacrus, whose electrical abilities often allow it to dominate the Piscine Wyvern. Thus, Plesioth avoids confrontation with fellow monsters when it can. Conversely, it is highly territorial towards weaker monsters and will often chase them away.

Female Plesioth are viviparous, raising live young in their wombs which become completely mobile before birth. Similar to sharks, young Plesioth will cannibalise their smaller or undeveloped siblings in the womb before they're born, giving them a nutritional edge when they emerge.

Habitat[]

Large bodies of water are home to Plesioth in many different types of habitats, including the Great Fortress Lake, the Jungle, Flooded Forest, and the waters around Cheeko Sands.

Trivia[]

  • In Monster Hunter Freedom Unite, Plesioth was notorious for its hip check attack’s ridiculously oversized hitbox, allowing it to hit hunters who had dodged it by right. This bug would become a popular meme in the community, with Capcom even acknowledging this in Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin, wherein Plesioth’s infamous hip check is titled “Hyperspace Tackle.”
