“ | Brute wyverns with disproportionately long tails. They spread a flammable substance which vaporizes quickly, then ignite it by dragging their tails along the ground. By nature, Quematrice rarely hunt their own prey, and instead scavenge herbivore carrion left behind by other predators. This often leads to confrontations with other, smaller carnivores. | „ |
Quematrice are monsters introduced in Monster Hunter Wilds. A diminutive species of Brute Wyvern native to the Forbidden Lands, Quematrice are characterised by their long, draped tails which they use to spread a flammable oil. Their aggressive and gluttonous natures make them quite a nuisance to caravans transporting food, especially rations of meat.
Why aren't they heroic or villainous?[]
Quematrice are for the most part, ordinary animals that don't act on a moral compass, hence making all of their "malicious" deeds purely out of survival instinct.
Physiology[]
The Quematrice is a small Brute Wyverns primarily covered in green scales with blue and red stripes. Like most other Brute Wyverns, it has small arms and large legs with knobbed toes. The Quematrice possesses numerous traits that cause it to resemble a chicken, such as a bright red comb on its head, a small wattle on its throat, as well as orange feather-like extensions from its tail that resemble a rooster's tail feathers. Its eyes also possess an orange mask-like crest around them. Its head is rather short and blunt, with several sharp teeth and enlarged lower canines.
Abilities[]
As a large monster, the Quematrice possesses the strength needed to boss smaller monsters around, additionally possessing the durability and stamina needed to engage in extended fights with the hunter. Its jaws and neck muscles are quite powerful, able to knock a hunter down with a single peck. The Quematrice's most notable ability is its secretion of a flammable oil from its tail, which it can ignite via friction by rubbing its tail on the ground. The impact of its tail can smack hunters off their feet, though the fire produced isn't very strong, indicating its use as a threat display instead of a weapon.
Behaviour[]
The Quematrice is a rather gluttonous and violent Brute Wyvern, attacking small monsters frequently in order to wrestle food from them. The first individual sighted in-game is seen giving chase to a trio of Felynes, attempting to steal a hock of meat they're transporting and accidentally cooking it with its flames. It's unafraid to challenge monsters much bigger than it, seeing as it engages in fights with Doshaguma, though it often loses as a result.
Habitat[]
Quematrice are native to the Windward Plains. They often occupy the savannah areas of the locale, where the carrion tends to be plentiful and the dry grass provides ample tinder for their flames.
Trivia[]
- The name Quematrice is a combination of quemar, meaning "to burn" in Spanish, and cockatrice, a legendary, serpentine monster, often depicted with the head and wings of a rooster and the body of a serpent.
- At 12.4m long on average, Quematrice is the smallest Brute Wyvern introduced thus far.
- Despite this, they would be fairly large Theropods in real life, being around the higher length estimates for Tyrannosaurus Rex.
