Raging Brachydios are a type of Brute Wyvern introduced in Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate. They are variants of Brachydios that, thanks to their much more sturdy and large builds, have been able to successfully harness the Flashpoint Slime, a strain of slime mold that produces incredibly strong detonations and can spread incredibly fast. As Raging Brachydios are known for possessing extreme belligerence and strength rivalling Elder Dragons, they are often hunted on sight if seen near human civilisation.
Physiology[]
Raging Brachydios has a dark green shell with yellow-orange slime mold on its head, back, tail, and forelimbs. When it gets angry, the slime mold turns red. It moves more slowly since it is notably bigger than typical Brachydios.
Abilities[]
Compared to the nominate species, Raging Brachydios is physically tougher, has a harder carapace, and has accumulated an abnormal type of slime mold that is far more volatile. The mold has explosive properties similar to that of its regular counterpart, but will detonate much faster and produce a much stronger blast when detached from its body. The slime mold will also turn red over time, becoming even more volatile to the point of exploding nigh-instantly on impact. Body parts with red slime may also shed the slime when damaged enough, causing a near-instant explosion at the cost of temporarily neutralizing that body part's explosive properties. Specimens of Raging Brachydios have been noted to be exceptionally old as well. While some suggest this may be thanks to the aptly named Immortal Reactor, which some believe may grant the Brachydios longevity as well as further control over the slime mold, others have suggested that old Raging Brachydios are common only because elders are more likely to survive obtaining the slime mold.
Certain Raging Brachydios have been known to experience extreme anger, causing them to lose most of their slime and become cracked and scorched to the point of continuously smoking. In this mode, Raging Brachydios loses its typical explosive slime and instead produces a molten, lava-like substance that burns anything that comes into contact with it. Raging Brachydios will spread this over incredibly large areas before causing it to explode with a roar all at once. Nevertheless, in this mode, it is more open to attack due to its damaged shell, to the extent that it frequently injures itself with its own explosions.
Behavior[]
Raging Brachydios is, as its name implies, far more aggressive than its typical counterpart and will strike without mercy, even if it means injuring itself. It is also so persistent that, rather than running away, it will try to take down its assailant with it if it senses that it is outmatched. So far, Raging Brachydios has been known to brawl with and even defeat extremely powerful monsters such as Bloodbath Diablos and Dreadking Rathalos, only being forced to evacuate its territory by First-Class Elder Dragons such as Alatreon and Crimson Fatalis.
Habitat[]
Only the Ingle Isle is home to Raging Brachydios in the Old World. Volcanic regions like the Guiding Lands are home to it in the New World.
Trivia[]
- In its quest in Monster Hunter World: Iceborne, Raging Brachydios is typically impossible to capture as the slime mold covering the floor of its final arena prevents traps from being laid. However, if the hunter deals enough damage to it in the jungle section, it is possible to lay traps and capture it though this results in the quest being failed.
- Raging Brachydios was voted as the 22nd most popular monster for the 20th Anniversary Hunter's Choice Poll for Top Monster, making it the most popular Brute Wyvern variant. Its final phase theme, Brutish Indigo Rages, was also voted among the Top 10 Monster Themes.
