Tatewaki Kuno (九能 帯刀 Kunō Tatewaki) is a major antagonist in Ranma ½. He is one of Ranma Saotome's main rivals and a suitor of Akane Tendo and female Ranma. He is also Kodachi's older brother.
He is voiced in Japanese by Hirotaka Suzuoki in Episodes 1-82, 87-161, OVAs 1-11 and Films, by Kōji Tsujitani in Episodes 83-86 and OVA 12 of the 1989 original series, and Tomokazu Sugita in the 2024 remake and by Ted Cole in the 1989 original series and Jonah Scott in the 2024 remake in English.
Biography[]
He is a master of kendo, Tatewaki is a the captain of the Kendo Club at Furinkan High and a classmate of Nabiki Tendo.
He was interested in Akane for a long time and declared that he would punish anyone who tried to date her without first defeating her in combat, resulting on Akane having to fight all her suitors when she arrives at school. When Kuno learned of her engagement to Ranma Saotome, he assumed that Ranma was hounding Akane and challenged him. It ended when both of them landed in a swimming pool and Ranma changed into his girl form. After being defeated, Kuno fell in love with her as well, being in love with Akane and female Ramna at the same time (unaware abaout that male and female Ranma are the same person).
He usually attempts to make Ranma his girlfriend more than he does with Akane. But Ranma has no feelings for Tatewaki at all, although he has taken advantage of Kuno's obsession when it suited his purposes. Blown up photographs of Akane and the Pigtailed Girl, courtesy of Nabiki, adorn the walls of his bedroom. Kuno still tried to defeat male Ranma solo or with he help of Sasuke (only in the anime). Kuno once was possesed by the spirit of Miyamoto Musashi by holding his sword and attacked the school at knight, expanding the rumor about a ghost being in the school, but he return to normal when the sword was destroyed by a lightning.
Abilities[]
Kuno has good Kendo abilities and is capable to fight with any sword. Initially he was a tough rival for Ranma, but later his abilities were weaker in comparation with the other characters.
