| ~ Toriel waking Kris at the start of the game |
Toriel Dreemurr is the tritagonist of the 2015 indie RPG, Undertale and a major character in it's 2018 episodic parallel story, Deltarune.
In Undertale, she is former monster Queen of the Underground, the ex-wife of Asgore Dreemurr and the mother of Asriel Dreemurr. In Deltarune, she is still Asgore's ex-wife and she adopted a second child, a human named Kris. Toriel is not the queen of the Underground, instead she is the school teacher for the first graders at Hometown school.
Why isn't she heroic or villianous?[]
- While she maintains her good-hearted nature from Undertale, Toriel's actions can't really qualify as full-on heroic, seeing as her best deed of comforting Susie only indirectly led her to redeeming herself.
- Despite being emotionally negligent to Kris at times, such as the ending of Chapter 4 when she fails to turn down the music and let them sleep, this isn't out of malice as she does try her best, and never becomes problematic enough to be considered criminal.
Appearance[]
Toriel retains her appearance from Undertale, being a white-furred Boss Monster resembling a Nubian goat with floppy ears and two small horns. However, she now wears an iris long-sleeve jacket, a black blouse, and a polka-dot skirt. She also dons half-rimmed pink reading glasses and a heart pendant, though said glasses are not visible on her dialogue box sprite.
For sleeping, Toriel dons a pink nightgown and nightcap, and while at church she wears the same lavender Delta Rune robe worn in Undertale, even removing her reading glasses as well to complete the look.
In the Dark World Toriel wears a light cyan robe with the Delta Rune, a golden necklace and pauldrons, as well as a small crown.
Personality[]
Similarly to her previous counterpart, Toriel is a kind-hearted and mild-mannered monster, displaying a motherly temperament towards others her junior. She appears to greatly dote on Kris, holding their hand to school on their first day, and being rather forgiving towards all of their shenanigans. She also expresses happiness at Kris making friends, displaying a great deal of care for her child's wellbeing. Toriel extends this kindness to others outside her family, seeing as she comforted Susie after finding her crying alone near the graveyard, assuring her that she would make new friends and even buying her a meal to enjoy. Toriel seems to be a religious person, being an avid participant in the church's choir and owning several hymnal books. She also appears to be rather old fashioned, owning outdated objects such as a landline phone and CRT television.
Despite this, Toriel does have her flaws, primarily her tendency to be judgemental. While forgiving towards Kris's mischief, she tends to expect them to cause trouble, accusing them of trying to clean up a bath bomb accident when they repeatedly flush the toilet and teasing them for eating all of the pie. Said nature seems to influence her interactions with Asgore as, while cordial to him, she displays looks of disdain towards him and often rebuffs his attempts at reconciliation, which seems to contribute to his desperation to make her forgive him. Additionally, it's implied that Toriel may be somewhat emotionally neglectful towards Kris, failing to notice any changes in their behaviour when they're possessed by the SOUL, even on the Weird Route. This seems to be exemplified in Chapter 4 when she not only fails to call Kris to inform them about her cancelled choir practice, but also neglects to turn the music down whilst partying with Sans when they try to go to bed. While the former could be attributed to Kris deleting all of their contacts, preventing Toriel from calling them, the latter displays that Toriel is rather flawed as a parent as she fails to acknowledge Kris's needs as a teenager.
Biography[]
Background[]
When she was younger, Toriel was college mates with Rudy, who recalls her rowdier side when she attended college parties, recounting a time when she smacked him all the way to the other side of a room by throwing a key lime pie. She would eventually end up working as a teacher in Hometown and marry Asgore, an aspiring policeman and florist. The two would have a son Asriel and later adopt a human named Kris, whom she would try her utmost best to care for. The family was exceptionally close, dining at QC's every Sunday after church. They also remained close friends with the Holiday family, watching Christmas specials together and often spending a lot of time near each other.
One day, however, Asgore would be involved in an incident (presumably something to do with Dess's disappearance) that caused him to get kicked off of the police force. It's heavily implied that this incident caused a rift between him and Toriel, causing her to divorce him and retain custody over their children, as well as the house, forcing Asgore to work another job as a florist to support himself. Despite this, the two remained on somewhat amicable terms, though Toriel still prefers not to interact with Asgore.
Sometime before the events of Chapter 1, Toriel found Susie crying alone on a bench near the graveyard. Consoling the girl, she would listen to her woes of loneliness and assure her that she'd make new friends soon, treating her to a meal at the diner. This would cause Susie to develop a great deal of respect towards Toriel for her kindness.
DELTARUNE[]
Chapter 1: The Beginning[]
At the beginning of the game, Toriel wakes Kris to go to school. As she drives them in her van, she brings up Asriel's visit from college next week, wondering if he'll still enjoy coming back to Hometown after living in the big city. She handholds Kris in the hall before hugging them as they go off to class.
When Kris exits the Dark World, Toriel calls them to check where they've been, scolding them for leaving her waiting for half an hour after school. When they tell her they've been hanging out with a friend, she relents and allows them to stay out for longer. When walking around the town, Kris can learn that Toriel bought some chocolate kisses from Sans earlier today, while Asgore will pass them a bouquet to pass to her.
Kris eventually returns home, where Toriel can be seen reading a book on her favourite chair Chariel. She tells Kris that she made some pie for them and asks them to go to bed first, allowing it to cool down for later. When talked to, she will recount a birthday party Asriel had that made him dislike green eggs, Kris wearing a horned headband in the past (after believing they would grow horns like their family), and how that she feels rather lonely at times alone at home. If declined to talk to, she will comment that Kris looks tired. The aforementioned bouquet can be given to Toriel, but after realising it's from Asgore she dumps it in the trashbin off-screen.
Chapter 2: A Cyber's World[]
The following morning, Toriel finds Kris's knife in an empty pie tin, causing her to realise they ate the whole thing up. She's amused by this and remarks that she probably needs to lock the oven up again before leaving for school. Later on, when Kris is busy transporting the Card Kingdom's Darkners to the closet in the form of a trash orb, they can walk in on Toriel asking Alphys on Kris's performance in school. Alphys will take a look at Kris's orb and, while perturbed, will answer that they're "normal" and their grades are fine. Kris can later call Toriel to tell her about their trash orb or Alphys's remarks, confusing her.
If Kris calls after leaving Castle Town but before going to study at the Library, Toriel jokingly tells them that if Berdly brings up Asriel's overdue library book fine, she will throw a smoke bomb so they can escape.
After returning from the Cyber World, Kris and Susie can enter Sans's grocery store. If they explore the leftmost side of the building, Toriel enters. She explains to Sans that she forgot the eggs that she purchased previously. The two share many egg-related puns until Asgore barges into the store to joke that he is her "eggs-husband." After an awkward silence among the group, Toriel attempts to exit, only for Asgore to ask her what will they do when Asriel returns home. She simply says that they should discuss that soon before leaving.
When Susie arrives at the Dreemurr residence, Toriel invites her in to make a pie while Kris uses the bathroom. When she goes to fetch the sugar, she realises her tires were slashed, preventing her from driving Susie home. Concerned for her safety, Toriel decides to let Susie sleep over with her family tonight. Thus, Susie and Kris go to watch TV in the living room and soon fall asleep, while Toriel calls the police about the incident before arriving at the living room to accompany her child.
Chapter 3: Late Night[]
Like Kris and Susie, Toriel is transported into the Dark World when the former opens a Fountain in the living room, though she remains asleep throughout the story. Tenna is apparently approached by the Knight shortly after this World is formed, being asked to abduct Toriel and keep her and the Delta Warriors busy. His henchmen find her sometime after the First Board and notify their boss, before placing Toriel in a giant gachapon capsule. Ramb is tasked with keeping her asleep with music and soothing scents, while Tenna keeps this information hidden from the contestants by vaguely referencing her as "this Dark World's greatest treasure".
After the Second Board, Susie catches on to Tenna's suspicious behaviour and leads Kris and Ralsei to investigate. After passing some locked doors, they find Toriel's capsule underneath a Christmas tree where she's still fast asleep. Tenna enters and talks to the sleeping Toriel, but quickly discovers the Delta Warriors when he lifts her capsule. This discovery causes them to turn on Tenna, especially when he tries to force them back on the show. During Tenna's manhunt for the Lightners when they escape, he gets informed by Ramb that Toriel is stirring but he quits.
At the end of Tenna's boss fight, he's convinced by Susie to reconsider his alliegance to the Knight and agrees to return Toriel as thanks for reinvigorating him. Before he can let the Lightners go home, the Knight arrives and slashes his arms off, presumably killing him. They attempt to abduct Toriel but is stopped by Susie, who leads the party in fighting the Knight. Whether the party manage to damage the Knight enough or fall prematurely, they're all knocked down by the Knight in the end, who resumes their attempt to abduct Toriel. Fortunately, Undyne arrives in the nick of time to hurl spears at the Knight, forcing them to abduct her instead. Susie will give chase, while Kris can choose to check on Toriel before running along: it's remarked that she's "sleeping peacefully" if the party was beaten by the Knight, while flavour text says she's "having a nightmare" if the Knight was defeated.
Chapter 4: Prophecy[]
After the fountain is sealed, Toriel wakes up with little recollection of what happened last night, dismissing it as a "strange dream". She wakes Kris up and cooks pancakes and omelettes for them and Susie. Toriel invites Susie to church, which she agrees to seeing as somebody there may have witnessed Undyne's abduction, though she does express her reluctance to go there behind Toriel's back. Toriel gives Kris and Susie some formal clothes for them to wear, allowing them to depart for church.
Later on, Toriel participates in the church choir and can be seen chatting with Rudy and Noelle after the service ends, complimenting the latter's singing earlier. If Kris interacts with her, she recommends that Susie and Kris should return home without her. After Kris has acquired enough clues, Toriel exits the hall. At the church's front door, Toriel ask Kris and Susie if they would like to go to QC's Diner. However, due to Asgore's abrupt appearance and him offering flowers, Toriel excuses herself and returns home. She can be found reading a book at home before Noelle's house is visited, commenting on Kris and Susie's lack of formal wear. Toriel will also remind them that she'll be going for choir practice later.
Thanks to the heavy rain, Toriel cancels the choir practice but forgets to tell Kris. When seeking shelter from the rain, she enters Sans's convenience store and ends up striking up a conversation with him, causing them to go to her house where she shutters herself in, chatting and hanging out with him whilst forgetting to let Susie and Kris in. When Susie and Kris come back from the Dark World, they find Sans and Toriel very drunk and dancing in the living room. Susie quickly leaves out of awkwardness while Kris, embarrassed, leaves for bed when Toriel invites them to hang out with her and Sans. They continue to hang out downstairs, seemingly making puns, but are suddenly silenced once Susie says something (on the Weird Route, their noises instead cut off when Kris gets a phone call from Carol Holiday).
Trivia[]
- While Toriel is currently classified as a Neutral character, she might get classified as a heroic character based on her actions in future chapters or, less likely, even a villainous one.
- Toriel answers the landline telephone with "Dreemurr residence," but refers to herself as "Ms. Toriel" in her classroom.
- Toriel has pictures of her, Kris and Asriel in her home and her school computer:
- A picture on her refrigerator shows herself, Asriel, and Kris, though Asgore is absent.
- The desktop wallpaper on Toriel's school computer is of Kris and Asriel dressed up for Halloween eight years before. During Chapter 2, the wallpaper changes to a picture of Kris and Asriel playing video games, with Asriel using the knock-off controller.
- Toriel's talksprite does not depict the glasses from her overworld sprite. This contrasts her Undertale counterpart, who has a matching talksprite when she wears reading glasses.
- Rudy mentioning Toriel being crazy at parties and hitting him with a key lime pie is likely a parallel to her Undertale counterpart throwing pizzas at Sans.
- Like Undertale's Toriel, she tends to leave white fur stuck in the drain of the kitchen sink, and a large container of pet shampoo in the bathroom is likely used by her. Unlike her Undertale counterpart, she leaves cinnamony batter on the stovetop, indicating that she does not use fire magic to cook.
- During the Spamton Sweepstakes, the official Deltarune website added URLs that are implied to be from Noelle's blog. One of her private posts states that Kris does not tell Toriel about Susie bullying them.
- In Chapter 3, when Tenna calls Toriel's name in the Cold Place, a snippet of Fallen Down, Toriel's theme from Undertale, plays.
