The leviathan that reigns supreme over the Scarlet Forest's ecosystem. It has adapted to water-rich environments and is sighted most often during the Downpour. Uth Duna's secretions when combined with water form a protective veil that not only absorbs hostile blows but also adds weight, which it slams down with enough force to sweep away surrounding threats in the resulting wave.
~ Uth Duna's entry in the Hunter's Notes

Uth Duna is a monster introduced in Monster Hunter Wilds. A species of Leviathan that acts as the apex of the Scarlet Forest, Uth Duna is known to be a powerful but graceful predator, using its massive weight to send out waves to batter foes, as well as forming fins made of water to protect itself. Its might and intolerance towards intruders have made it a threat to people in the area, particularly researchers studying its native ecosystem.

Why isn't it heroic or villainous?[]

Like most other monsters in the series, Uth Duna lacks moral agency, acting only out of survival instincts.

Physiology[]

The Uth Duna is a reptilian Leviathan that possesses a hefty, quadrupedal build. Its body is covered in red, lustrous scales with blue stripes on its back, while its face is fish-like and resembles an arapaima's, with yellowish striped patterns near its eyes which have white pupils. When sufficiently hydrated, the Uth Duna extends tentacles coated in small blue cilia from its head, forelimbs and tail, forming purplish-blue water veils that shield it from harm. These veils will disappear if sufficiently damaged and as such, the Uth Duna will retract its tentacles. The Uth Duna's belly is also a light beige, while its actual tail is rather short.

Abilities[]

As the apex predator of the Scarlet Forest, the Uth Duna is an exceptionally powerful predator. Its hefty frame belies an incredible grace and agility that the Uth Duna possesses underwater, allowing it to swim with incredible speed and breach the water with immense power, creating tidal waves which send foes flying. The Uth Duna often utilises its incredible bulk in battle, using belly flops to crush foes underneath. Furthermore, the Uth Duna's arms are strong enough to grapple a full grown Rathalos to the ground with just a single swipe, making it virtually uncontested in its natural habitat.

The Uth Duna's most unique features are the water veils extending from its body, which are formed from water mixing with its bodily fluids. These veils provide incredible defence to the Uth Duna, allowing it to weather attacks from most foes. These veils also possess their own health pools, meaning that damaging them will not hurt the Uth Duna. However, they can be destroyed with sufficient damage, which will force the Uth Duna to rehydrate. In the meantime, it will become much more aggressive as it's no longer weighed down by the water veils, unleashing attacks in incredibly rapid succession.

Behaviour[]

Like most other powerful monsters, Uth Duna is an aggressive and territorial monster that views most smaller creatures as food. It often emerges during the Downpour inclemency when its water abilities are heightened, snacking on smaller Leviathans such as Piragill and fish like Gajau. It's unknown what its purpose for advancing on the Scarlet Forest base camp is, though it's likely it saw the area as a feeding spot thanks to the abundance of small monsters used as beasts of burden present there.

Habitat[]

Uth Duna is the apex of the Scarlet Forest and as such, has only been found there. It mostly spends its time underwater, only emerging onto land to hunt in the Downpour.

Trivia[]

  • The name Uth Duna is a transliteration of the Japanese name, which likely derives from uzu (うず), Japanese for "whirlpool", as well as Duna, which is Fijian for "eel".
  • Uth Duna has unique protrusible jaws like a lot of fish species possess.
  • All of Uth Duna's weapons and gear seem to be based off Polynesian weapons and fashion in particular.
