The Velkhana are an Elder Dragon species that appears in the science fantasy videogame, Monster Hunter World: Iceborne where it appeared as the secondary antagonist. Renowned in fairy tales for their seemingly limitless control over ice, the existence of this Elder Dragon species was proven when one was driven out of its natural habitat by Shara Ishvalda's burrowing, leading to its encounter with the Hunters' Guild.
History[]
Before one was seen flying with a flock of Legiana during the enigmatic Legiana Migration, Velkhana were believed to be a myth. It traveled to the New World to find a unique type of ore that it utilizes for its own purposes after the recently awakened Shara Ishvalda upended its native environment in the Hinterlands.
Physiology[]
Velkhana has the same basic shape as most other elder dragons: four legs and two wings on its back. Velkhana's wings are massive, estimated to be about twenty meters long, and these extra limbs aid it in its flight. Covering Velkhana's entire body is overlapping feather-like scales that one might immediately think is how Velkhana keeps itself warm in the cold environments it inhabits, but that isn't the case. At the very tip of its wings is a small amount of fat that allows cold air to enter its body and, much like waterfowl, it uses countercurrent heat exchange to keep itself warm in such environments, losing little heat in the process. In contrast to other elder dragons, Velkhana rarely uses its claws in battle because they are crucial to its movements; its hook-like claws are used to grip the icy floor of its habitat, preventing Velkhana from slipping on the snow and ice that litters its turf. Instead of using its claws, Velkhana primarily uses its spear-like tail in combat against threats, impaling its enemies several times with great speed and accuracy. Although Velkhana's entire body is covered in scales, the blue shards on its body aren't scales; they are a type of ore that resembles volcanic glass, which Velkhana uses to control its fabled icy abilities.
Abilities[]
With the help of its ore-infused scales, Velkhana can manage cold in a number of ways. Its primary method of attack is blowing supercooled fluid on enemies, which flash-freezes upon impact and enables it to build walls and ice spikes that explode. Additionally, it may utilize this to distribute freezing clouds that can trap foes and form icy armor to protect itself. When Velkhana attacks these clouds with breath attacks, they will freeze on its own, enabling it to shower ice pieces down on its enemies. Additionally, Velkhana is extremely elusive and nimble, scuttling around its adversaries and striking from a variety of angles with its slender, spear-like tail. Interestingly, it can use its ice to make a prosthesis if its tail is severed during combat.
Behavior[]
Velkhana are very protective of their territory and will fight any invaders, just like many Elder Dragons do. Additionally, they have a reputation for freezing smaller animals and leaving their frozen bodies as a warning to anybody attempting to enter their territory.
When not disturbed, Velkhana is comparatively quiet. It is aware of its strength and that most, if not all, creatures will refrain from confronting it in battle. When irritated, Velkhana will envelop itself in ice and then launch a furious assault on its attackers. In order to frighten away any potential dangers from its area, Velkhana is known to freeze any smaller monsters it comes across in its land.
Velkhana is a very high-ranking dragon, much like other elder dragons, and its diet consists of both tiny and huge monsters, like Remobra, Aknosom, Somnacanth, Baggi, and Great Baggi. Only Elder Dragon-Level Monsters (Savage Deviljho, Magnamalo and its Variant Scorned Magnamalo, Rajang and its Variant Furious Rajang) or Elder Dragons and Risen Variants (Kushala Daora, Teostra and its mate Lunastra, Ruiner Nergigante, and Malzeno/Primordial Malzeno) have the ability to challenge and possibly kill a Velkhana.
Habitat[]
Although Velkhana has been observed in the Ancient Forest, Wildspire Waste, Coral Highlands, Rotten Vale, and Elder's Recess in the New World, it is thought that riding the wind currents in these areas helps it fly. Velkhana is typically found in cold mountainous habitats such as the Hoarfrost Reach, where it is isolated and hidden from most other creatures.
