Violet Beauregarde is one of the four antagonists (alongside Augustus Gloop, Veruca Salt and Mike Teavee) of the book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and its film adaptations.

She is a skillful, self-centered, rude, and chewing gum-obsessed girl who is the third person to find a Golden Ticket and the second to be eliminatred from the tour.

In the 1971 film adaptation, she was portrayed by the late Denise Nickerson. In the 2005 film adaptation, she was portrayed by AnnaSophia Robb.

Appearance[]

Blueberry[]

Once she chews the gum that gives her a full three-course meal and gets to the desert, she grows into a blueberry and her clothes, body and hair all change to a blue color. The book and 2005 film depict her as very very large and the Oompa Loompas were able to jump on her. She gets chubbier, her limbs get smaller and her belly now sticks out. The 1971 film depicts her as significantly smaller, growing almost as wide as she is tall and absorbing everything except for her head, hands, and feet into her blueberry form. She remains capable of moving on her own, although greatly hindered due to her enormous size and only while standing upright. Once shifted onto her back or side, Violet is completely immobile. Her clothes also conform to her new shape, not revealing her midsection. Instead of bouncing on her, she gets rolled out. In the 2005 film, she gets back to her normal size once all of the juice was squeezed out and she gains the ability to be much more flexible at the cost of being permanently blue.

Books[]

She is a slender girl with short and curly brown hair. She wears a purple shirt and blue pants.

1971[]

She is seen with long brown hair tied into a ponytail with a short hairline at the front. She is slightly larger in size. In the interview, she is wearing a red sports jacket and pencil skirt. During the visit to the chocolate factory, she wears a blue outfit with gold buttons and a red belt (which pops off during her blueberry transformation).

2005[]

Once again, she is seen with short hair, only this time it's straight and is blonde. During the interview, she is seen with a pink jumpsuit. In a flashback, she is seen with karate robes During the visit to the chocolate factory, she also wears a jumpsuit except its now blue.

Personality[]

Violet is extremely arrogant and narcissistic and think she can win at anything. Much like Augustus, she is also gluttonous over chewing gum due to chewing one for "3 months solid" just to spite her rival Cornelia before switching to candy bars after hearing about the tickets. She is also extremely aggressive as she brutally incapacitated and beat up two karate men during her introduction for no reason at all.

As for her interactions, she has an easygoing relationship with her mother as she always impresses her and her mother always copies her outfits. She was nice to Veruca during their first interaction, as when Veruca asked her to be friends, she replied "Best friends" and they cling onto each other. But she is very mean to Charlie as she steals an apple from him and when he asks why she holds onto her gum and not start a new piece, she responds with, "Because then I wouldn't be a champion. I'd be a loser, like you." Ironically, it was her own arrogance and gluttony that led to her own downfall when she tried the three-course meal gum and refused to spit it out despite both Willy Wonka and Grandpa Joe's warnings. In the end, she is truly a coward, as she has no problem with bullying other people and risking her life for gum but screams when Violet herself gets rolled all the way into the juicing room and running onto the ground head-first.

Overall, she is portrayed with zero sympathy whatsoever (with the exception of the Oompa Loompas pitying her tongue) and serves as a primary example of an envious, narcissistic and gluttonous character.

Synopsis[]

All[]

The gum she chews on consists of tomato soup for breakfast, roasted beef with baked potatos and crispy skin and butter for lunch and blueberry pie and ice-cream. After turning into a blueberry, her parents say they can't have her as a daughter.

1971[]

She spent the whole movie trying to spite her rival Cornelia. She was also the 3rd finder of the golden tickets. Violet later turned into a blueberry once she failed to stop chewing the three-course meal gum. After being rolled out, she was never seen again.

2005[]

She is first seen beating up 2 karate men. Mrs. Beaureguarde shows off with the trophies that she has won. Violet mentions that she loves to chew gum but switches to candy bars once the Golden Tickets were passed out.

At her mother's suggestions, she keeps her eye on the "prize." She is seen introducing herself to Willy Wonka. Once she sees all of the beauties in the Chocolate Room, she swallows back the bubble she is blowing. She steals an apple from Charlie and calls him a loser for asking why she won't start a new piece.

She is later seen in the Invention room asking what those ball shaped candies are, of which Wonka responds with the fact that they are gobstoppers. After that, she is given a chewing gum that has a three course meal and as she chews it, Willy Wonka and Grandpa Joe warns her to stop chewing it. She then turns into a 10ft blueberry and Willy Wonka admitted that he tried it on 20 Oompa Loompas and they also ended up as blueberries. Veruca suggested she be put in a county fair. The Oompa Loompas proceed to sing a song about her and roll her around before transporting her into the juicing room. She exits the factory all flexible at the cost of permanently being blue.

Trivia[]

  • She and Augustus Gloop are very similar due to the fact that both are primary examples of gluttonous characters, with Augustus being gluttonous over candy and meat and Violet being gluttonous over chewing gum.
  • Considering she isn't chewing gum when leaving the factory in the 2005 film, it's possible that she learned her lesson and doesn't chew gum anymore, compared to Augustus and Veruca that continue their bad behaviors even after being punished once for it.
