The Yian Garuga made its formal debut in Monster Hunter Freedom Unite. It is a Bird Wyvern that, despite its close relation to the skittish Yian Kut-Ku, is infamous for its incredible aggression that allows it to assert itself as the apex predator of any region it appears in. Thus, hunters are sent to drive them off or kill them if they encroach on human settlements.
The Scarred Yian Garugas, the Bird Wyverns are legally recognized as Variants of Yian Garuga, even though they actually debuted after Scarred Yian Garuga.
Why aren't they heroic or villainous?[]
- Although highly destructive, what they do are animal instincts rather than malice.
Physiology[]
A large, avian Bird Wyvern, Yian Garuga greatly resembles its relative Yian Kut-Ku, with the both possessing bat-like wings, large round beaks with underbites, and huge quarter-circle ears. Unlike Kut-Ku, Garuga’s coloration is mainly purple, with its ears and beak possessing sharp points and edges. It is covered in a solid, purple hide with a tail terminating in three large black spines. It also possesses a mane of white fur behind the back of its head.
Abilities[]
Yian Garuga can stop opponents in their tracks with ear-splitting roars and a venomous tail club. It is highly cunning and will stay clear of pitfalls. It is also impervious to sonic explosives. Furthermore, Yian Garuga is known to be strong, durable and resilient to ridiculous degrees, with an individual attacked by Deviljho not only being able to withstand being thrown into several boulders with bo injury, but also knock the massive Brute Wyvern down with a few swift kicks.
Behavior[]
Yian Garuga is a particularly aggressive Bird Wyvern that shares many traits with Rathians, including behavior and attack repertoire. However, it is noted to be unusually powerful for the Bird Wyvern class thanks to its array of powers and abilities, making it an apex predator in its own right, far more so than Rathian. Yian Garuga possesses great hostility towards its cousin Yian Kut-Ku, displacing it from its roosting grounds frequently and parasitising it as a brood parasite: during mating season Garugas will destroy Kut-Ku eggs and replace them with their own eggs, leaving the hapless parents to raise the Garuga chick. The two species also compete for monopoly over the local insect population, with Garuga often winning thanks to its insane demeanour.
Habitat[]
In wooded regions including the Jungle, Gorge, Great Forest, Forest and Hills, Esther Lake, Everwood, Jurassic Frontier, and Guiding Lands, Yian Garuga has been sighted.
