Yian Kut-Ku is a species that appears in the fantasy videogame Monster Hunter. A common species of Bird Wyvern, Yian Kut Ku are meek and weak insectivores, defending themselves with threat displays and small fireballs. While mostly harmless to humans, their occasional intrusions into human settlements have given them enough of a reputation to warrant hunting, mostly as an introductory monster for rookie hunters.
Why aren’t they heroic or villainous?[]
- They are mainly minding their own business until the hunter comes.
Physiology[]
The Yian Kut-Ku is distinguished by its larger lower bill and enormous, fan-like ear frills that unfold when it gets aroused. Their broad yellow beak has a pink stripe going down the middle of the upper part of it. Its beak's lower jaw is noticeably bigger and heavier than the upper jaw. Beige scales and orange-pink plating cover Yian Kut-Ku's body. Its eyes are brilliant yellow, and its wing membranes are a deep blue color. These wyverns are swift and nimble due to their tiny size and relative lightness. The big frills that around their ears give them a very keen sense of hearing.
Abilities[]
A small and delicate Bird Wyvern, the Yian Kut-Ku is a speedy but skittish monster, often darting around from place to place in battle. Its large wings allow it to fly relatively well, while the fireballs from its beak can dispatch weaker prey with ease. The Yian Kut-Ku is large enough to knock down a human with a charge forwards, while its beak can crush both nuts and invertebrate shells.
The Yian Kut-Ku's large ears allow it incredible hearing, as well as the ability to use them for threat displays. This of course, makes it vulnerable to loud sounds such as those produced by a Sonic Bomb, stunning it in place.
Behaviour[]
Skittish and inquisitive, Yian Kut-Kus typically dislike people intruding into their territories, scaring off intruders with threat displays such as fireballs and wing flaps. However, if these attempts fail they will often flee, seeing as they dislike combat. Despite this, some older individuals are known to be braver and hardier. As omnivores, Yian Kut-Ku eat a variety of seeds, fruits and animals, with their preferred prey being Neopterons like Konchu.
During the mating season, female Yian Kut-Kus will develop feathers on their bellies that keep their eggs warm. They will look after their hatchlings, feeding them nutrient-rich honey and grubs until they grow old enough to fend for themselves. Kut-Ku breeding schedules are highly reliant on the presence of abundant food, such as bugs after rainfall. Thus, Yian Kut-Ku are seen as symbols of luck, as their mating season heralds times of plenty for farmers. Unfortunately, Yian Kut-Ku are often attacked by their cousins, Yian Garuga, during these times. These belligerent Bird Wyverns often raid Kut-Ku nests, killing and eating their occupants and stealing their locations. As the two species share a diet, Kut-Ku populations are often forced to move out when a single Garuga arrives in the locale.
Yian Kut-Kus of the Forbidden Lands display a behaviour rather different to their usual counterparts. While Kut-Kus are usually solitary, individuals in the Forbidden Lands are known to nest in dense flocks, roaming the land in packs of three during the Plenty. They're also much more confrontational and aggressive than their westward counterparts, likely due to the abundant resources there allowing them to become much more strong.
Habitat[]
Yian Kut-Ku appears to live in a number of different places, including the Old Volcano and the Verdant Hills.
