Zorah Magdaros are an Elder Dragon species that appears in the fantasy videogame, Monster Hunter: World where it appeared as one of the two secondary antagonists (alongside Nergigante). A colossal monster that wears a shell made of igneous rock and lava, a dying Zorah Magdaros's journey to the New World kicks off the game's plot as the Hunters' Guild realise the sheer levels of bioenergy released from its death would wipe out all life on the New World. Thus, the Fifth Fleet of the Research Commission is sent to pursue the ailing titan, hoping to divert it away from the Everstream and prevent calamity.
Why aren’t they heroic or villainous?[]
- In general, they do not fight. The reason it is hunted is because it got lured to the new world just like other Elder Dragons.
Physiology[]
The enormous semi-aquatic Elder Dragon Zorah Magdaros has a rocky hide. It resembles a turtle because it has a beaked mouth and a mountainous shell on its back that it can retract under when it is on all fours. The monster resembles a walking volcano more than a normal creature since fire, smoke, and lava are continuously emitted from its shell. Zorah possesses four weak spots, three magmacore organs on its back and one on its head.
Behavior and Abilities[]
Zorah Magdaros is a monstrous creature with extraordinary strength and durability due to its size and rock-like coat. It is practically immune to ordinary assaults and can easily breach defenses and terrain, while siege weapons like ballistae, cannons, and dragonators can still damage it. Despite the collateral damage it produces by moving around, it is generally docile and prefers to disregard most threats. However, when sufficiently enraged, it will fight back with the immense weight of its physical attacks. Magma is continuously erupting from crater-like vents all throughout Zorah Magdaros's body, including its magmacores and hide. It has the ability to weaponize this by releasing large spouts of flame and magma, as well as a shower of lava bombs.
Habitat[]
Zorah Magdaros are known to inhabit a wide array of regions in the Old World, usually underground or deep underwater. They will emerge into the open ocean to cross over to the New World when they're about to die or when they're lured over by Xeno'jiva's calls.
Trivia[]
- Zorah Magdaros corpses appear to make up multiple locales in the Monster Hunter universe, with the entirety of the Guiding Lands being fashioned from one's corpse and the Frost Islands in Monster Hunter Rise being the nest of one, with its skull and ribs being found in areas 7 and 8 respectively.
- The Frost Islands notes reveal that this Zorah was hunted and killed by a group of seafaring hunters, who got shipwrecked on its nest after slaying it. Ironically, the bioenergy released by this Zorah attracted the nearby monsters which slaughtered the entire crew. This implies that this Zorah Magdaros was a young specimen and as such, its release of bioenergy wasn't catastrophic.
